Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network
Faces of Rescue
January to June 2007

Meet the lucky Cairn Terriers brought into the Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network in 2007. This is our fourth year to have a comprehensive listing of all terriers accepted by our rescue group. Our ability to rescue this tremendous amount of Cairns is ONLY due to the hard but rewarding work of our many Volunteers as well as your financial support of our Cairn Rescue Mall, Corporate Affiliate Programs, Grandparent and Guardian Angel Programs as well as the many Direct Donations with which you have been so generous. Thank you from all of us.

IMPORTANT - The dogs on this page are not necessarily available for adoption. If you have applied to adopt a cairn from CPCRN, ONLY the dogs listed on the AVAILABLE CAIRNS page are currently available for adoption.

This foster dog pictorial is to show ALL dogs that passed through CPCRN this year. It DOES NOT show Cairns available for adoption on any particular date. While all of our foster dogs for the current year will be listed here, many may not be available for adoption immediately OR AT ALL. Some will be in the process of being adopted, many will be already adopted, and others may be in our "FOSTER TO ADOPT" program. CPCRN evaluates the temperament and health of our dogs prior to any adoption availability and brings them current on their medical needs. Sadly some dogs we take in will NEVER be adopted because of health or temperament issues. PLEASE check the Available Cairns page to check on AVAILABLE dogs. Also, since this is a yearly listing, many on this list may have already been adopted.

Did you know:

  • The most common signs of diabetes are drinking too much and peeing too much?
  • 1 out of 200 dogs develop diabetes?
  • Treating diabetes in dogs is relatively simple?
  • Diabetic dogs usually have a normal life span?

Rainbow Tears

Helen Davidson

Tears fell at CPCRN when Helen unexpectedly passed away on January 28, 2007. A tireless worker and delightful personality will be missed by those left behind. Our cairns at Rainbow Bridge are barking in celebration, however, to have Helen there to help watch over them.

The Col. Potter community extends their deepest sympathy to Helen's husband, Charlie, and the entire family.

March 2007

Aloysius Clay, all 6 pounds of him, was diagnosed with Hepatic Portal Systemic Shunt at the age of 11 weeks. The portal vein is supposed to deliver blood to the liver but instead bypasses it; therefore, the poisons and toxins are not cleansed from the system. Without treatment and surgery, the puppy would die. CP is giving this little guy a chance at a full life. He will be on a special restricted diet and medication to keep him stabilized for right now. He will be monitored and have a series of tests. If he is a candidate for surgery, a specialist in the field of liver shunts will perform the operation.

Followup: Our little Wishy got two wonderful things: his surgery and his forever home. Two days following what appeared to be successful surgery, Wishy suddenly died, breaking the hearts of his owners and the entire CP community.

Fly free, sweet Wishy. You will always be loved.

Wicked is a parallel novel and Broadway play which gives a revisionist look at the land and characters of Oz before Dorothy and Toto arrive. It provides political, social and ethical commentary on what good and evil really are.

CP's Wicked Stars have lived in Oz with the good and the evil. They have spent their entire lives producing puppies for the evil PM. Now they have outlived their usefulness to the PM and they have found the good in CP's loving arms. But as a parting remembrance of evil, two of our Wicked Stars are heartworm positive and will have to undergo treatment and 6 more weeks of living in a crate before they can truly start to enjoy the good and freedom.

In Wicked, Elphaba and Nessarose are physically handicapped sisters, so these are the names for our 2 HW+ girls. Galinda, after the Good Witch, must have been quite a Good Mother at age 7 when sheas she just whelped her last litter in December. Fiyero is the handsome Prince in Wicked and I'm sure in his former life, he was quite the man with the ladies.

So, there you have our Wicked Stars! Let's give them a round of applause and standing ovation to welcome them to CP's version of Oz!!

EASTER BUNNIES HOPPING DOWN CP BUNNY TRAIL!!!

It was truly GOOD FRIDAY for four little Cairns! The Easter Bunnies made it out of a PM and onto the CP Bunny Trail of freedom!!!

These Easter Bunnies come from the story of Peter Rabbit. While Peter Rabbit's sisters, Flopsy and Mopsy were picking blackberries as they had been told by Mother Rabbit, Peter Rabbit took the lazy way out and ate the vegetables from Mr. McGregor's garden. On a return trip, Peter Rabbit got his cousin Benjamin involved as well. Both boys got into a lot of trouble for raiding the garden (sounds a lot like a Cairn doesn't it), but in the end came out OK (again sounds like a Cairn).

The Spring Weather Kids

Spring Sun

These seven lucky Cairns are going to be enjoying this spring in freedom, rolling in the green grass and smelling the spring blossoms! The Spring Weather kids came into Col. Potter in a round about way. These kids, along with several other breeds, were seized from a puppy mill and put in the custody of a local humane society, who in turn contacted CP to take the Cairns.

Their names may sound like the nastier side of spring weather, but their lives will be filled with rainbows and sunshine from now on!

WELCOME WINDY CITY KIDS IV!!!

Windy City Kids IV

Chicago provided 8 more Windy City kids to be nurtured by CP. After the winter, most of these kids are desperately in need of grooming. The groomer at the vet was going to try to trim off some of the dreadlocks and get them cleaned up some. Once they get baths and are stripped out, groomed and their coats grow back, these will all be gorgeous little furkids!

THREE VIRTUES

Three Virtues

These three little Cairns had an uncertain future. Would they be destined to living their life in purgatory pumping out litter after litter of puppies? Living in filthy conditions with little food and water and no medical care until their bodies could no longer produce puppies, they would then be disposed of like yesterday's trash. These three got lucky when our rescue angel saw them and their Virtues. The Three Virtues became CP's newest furkids and are now safely ensconsed in the safe and loving environment of Oz Project.

The costs associated with PM kids are generally much higher than owner surrenders or shelter surrenders. CP's Name a PM Kid is devoted to helping the PM kids. It's a wonderful way to help support our PM efforts while acknowledging and recognizing those that are special to you. The donated names are only used for PM kids adding to meaningfulness of each one. With Father's Day coming up next month, this is a perfect gift for the dad that loves animals and already has almost everything.

Beacon gets out of breath when playing with another dog and can't bark. Following a complete exam and an xray, she was diagosed with a severely collapsed trachea. This little girl has two options:

  1. A very inactive, short life
  2. Surgery to insert a stent in the trachea

The BoD has approved having Beacon tested to see if she is a candidate for this surgery. Beacon will have a bronchoscopy which is sending a camera down her throat to determine the damage and if a stent would be a viable option. If it is determined that she is a candidate, the surgery will be performed right then. If she's not, there isn't much else we can do for her but try to keep her as quiet, calm and comfortable for as long as possible.

Needless to say, this surgery is very specialized and also very expensive. She will be set-up as a Guardian Angel and could certainly use your support.

This little girl has been named Beacon, which is a donated name. She just turned 6 months old and weighs all of 10.5 pounds. She is an absolute treasure, very sweet, friendly, loving and just loves to be held and cuddled. Beacon definitely deserves this chance to have her light continue to shine for many years to come ...

IMPORTANT - If you have applied to adopt a cairn from CPCRN, ONLY the dogs listed on the AVAILABLE CAIRNS page are currently available for adoption. You can view all Cairns currently available for adoption here: Available Cairns

PLEASE check the website for the current status and availability.
