Spring Into Action

Each day our intakes team gets leads on dogs that need rescue - some we can help, Some are already being helped and we can be thankful others are also there to help them, and some we cannot help. Some owners just need advice on how to care for a cairn - those independent minded little snots. But every now and again, our intakes team learns of dogs in need who need assistance VERY quickly - at that time they Spring Into Action - checking for foster homes, getting agreement from the Board of Directors that we have enough funds to care for them, finding veterinary care, notifying our Transport Team, and then negotiating to get the dogs into CPCRN itself.

COLONEL (POTTER THAT IS) STAYS AN EXECUTION! You know how those prison movies keep us on edge waiting for the message from the Governor that calls off the inmate’s pending execution? Actually, it was a call from the Colonel who stayed one dog's execution. In mid December Izzy was a stray on death row (the euthanasia list) at a pound in the mid west. Another rescue organization scooped her up and called Col. Potter. No one told us what might have made this 2 year old cutey pie seems like such a hopeless case at the pound. Izzy Maybe no one knew. She is just about the friendliest girl you would ever want to meet. A living doll baby of cairn sweetness – she’s a tiny one at 12 and ½ pounds.

So what could have been the catch? She should have been the Princess of the Pound! Well Izzy had a little “hitch in her giddy up” just a tiny bit of a limp. She walks on three legs every once in a while when she is just hanging around. “No problem!” you say, “all of us have a few imperfecksuns”. But it gets worse! If you take her for a short walk, this little girl spends about 60% of her time moving just fine, but only using three legs. Then she limps the rest of the day.

So she’s off to the vet for an X ray. And then we get the very bad news … Izzy has Aseptic Necrosis of the Femoral Head (Legg-Calve Perthe’s Disease). This is a disorder that is fairly common in some small breeds like terriers. Once the process starts the blood supply in the hip joint fails to keep the bone alive and the bone dies. This causes the lameness. It gets worse. Without a very expensive surgery (about $2500.00) Izzy would be condemned to an increasingly more and more painful life. With a fairly simple, but miraculous surgery, Izzy can enjoy a full and entirely pain free life. According to the regular vet and the surgeon looking at her x-ray Our Little Izzy should be in absolute agony. We won’t tell her that because she looks very happy playing with her stuffed toys. We have to watch her because the bone is so flimsy she could easily break her hip. At that point there would be no real choice for Izzy

Izzy is sweet and friendly to every four legged and two legged being she meets. She is incredibly smart. In the two weeks she has been in foster care, she has learned commands such as off, stay, and sit. Before we knew she had a problem, she used to dance and beg on her hind legs for treats! Hopefully one day soon, she'll be dancing again!

Then there are intakes we can only help so much - Her whole life – 8 years – she was on this earth for one purpose, produce puppies to make money. She’s probably had 15 litters of puppies. Her little body was used up from the years of constant breeding and neglect.

Then one day something changed – Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network entered her life. She was freed from the life of a breeder. Her coat was filthy and matted to the point she had to be trimmed just to determine her sex. But, oh that first bath felt so good. Then the second one even better to finally get all the urine, feces, dirt and stench off of her. She now had a name – Carthage.

Her battle for freedom was just beginning. Carthage was diagnosed with stage 3 heartworm, the worst and most dangerous to treat and overcome. She also had a huge cancerous mass on her breast. The breast mass had to be removed before even attempting heartworm treatment. Her blood panel results indicated a problem with her liver which should be resolved before attempting surgery. After several weeks of supplements and treatments, the numbers were only worse and it was very apparent the breast mass was growing and would soon take Carthage’s life if something was not done quickly. The decision was made to attempt surgery to remove the breast mass. It was Carthage’s only chance of survival and continuing her journey to freedom. Click here to see her removed tumor.

The surgery lasted more than two hours, an extremely long time for a dog whose body has been so compromised to be under anesthesia. The breast mass was tightly affixed to the muscles and other organs and had to be slowly and precisely cut away and removed. When the surgery was finished, the removed tumor was more than 4” in diameter. Click here to see her incision.

After talking to lots of people (vets, etc), they have all told us that Carthage has maybe 3 to 6 months to live, that the tumor will come back quickly as it had spread to her lymph nodes and also the margins on the specimen they took out had tumor, which means they did not get it all. Because of this, it was recommended by all that we talked to that we just let her live her life and not put her through the harsh heartworm treatment, To just put her on heartguard to kill some of them and keep her on the doxycyclin to stop any side effects of the worms dying. The kindest thing we could do is to just let her enjoy the sun, grass and lovings. Her foster mom has agreed to keep her until it is time to send her to the bridge. So while we can not promise a long future for Carthage, she will learn love, laughter and the joy of life before she makes her way to the Rainbow Bridge.

This fundraiser is devoted to specifically helping in the procurement,
vetting and foster care of Puppy Mill breeding dogs and other Mill surrender dogs.

Col Potter Cairn Rescue Network is an IRS registered 501(c)3 Charity.

These are the rules:

Our Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network's A New Leash On Life XVII Fundraiser will start on Thursday March 25th, 2010 at 9:00 AM EDT and close on Sunday, April 11th, 2010 at 9:00 PM EDT.
For every $15 donation or like quantity thereof [i.e. a donation of $60.00 would entitle a donor to have their name placed in four squares] a pledge square or squares will be assigned to the donor, numbered between 1 and 1500. Pledged squares are assigned sequentially as donations are received. Specific number(s) cannot be requested by the donor. Your pledge square numbers will be e-mailed to you upon processing your donation submission and entry into our A New Leash On Life Pledge database.
All donations must be received within 30 days after the close of the fundraiser, otherwise your entry will be voided and any gifts you may have won will be forfeited. If you receive a statement saying we did not receive your payment, PLEASE respond immediately so you do not lose your prize. These statements are sent via email and are valid as of the moment of sending - if you mailed a payment or made it via paypal, please respond or we will not know to look.
When making your donation, you will be asked to list your top 10 choices in gifts. Once submitted, gift requests cannot be changed. CPCRN reserves the right to choose for you if all your gift choices were previously won. We hope you like it, there will be no changes once the award has been announced. There is no guarantee that the gift you win will be the most valuable.
Donations to this fundraiser are not tax deductible. Per the IRS: Contributions you cannot deduct at all include...the cost of raffles, bingo, or other games of chance. You cannot deduct contributions that you give to qualified organizations if, as a result, you receive or expect to receive a financial or economic benefit equal to the contribution.
Gift selection has been automated with the following rules:
- If by chance, the New Leash has over 1500 pledges, CPCRN will add prizes to maintain the 1 in 10 chance of receiving a gift. These additional items are usually duplicates of other prizes already shown.
- If your pledge square is drawn, three passes will be made to determine which gift you will receive. All passes will go in order of the Winners Selection Listing. Gift searching stops for your square once a gift has been awarded.
- Pass 1: You will be awarded the top gift still available from your wish list. If your top available gift is "Donate Gift Back to CPCRN" then your gift search stops, and this is considered your selection. If your top available gift is "Pick For Me" or if all of your wish list items that are associated with that pledge square were previously selected by prior winners, then gift selection will be attempted during "Pass 3".
- Pass 2: All winners who did not have a gift selected in Pass 1 will have our database checked for alternate gift selections on different squares assigned to the same name. (If you use a nickname one time, and your full name the next, we will NOT associate them.) If any of these squares are associated with gifts that have not yet been awarded, the highest ranking available gift will be chosen for you. If gifts are available on more than one square at the same level, the choice between them is random. If all gifts on every square belonging to unique name are not available, then gift selection will occur during Pass 3.
- Pass 3: All those that do not already have a gift selection will be randomly assigned a gift via a random number generator.
$15 donation for a pledge square is a suggested donation. You may receive a pledge square without donating. Send a request to ANLOL@CairnRescue.com and include all the information requested on the donation form along with your list of 10 choices in the email or we will use 'Pick for Me' as your choice.
This fundraiser is open to all individuals over 21 years of age, including CPCRN Board Members, Directors, Group leaders or managers alike with one exception. The person who will run the random selection program to pull 150 unique pledge square numbers will not be allowed to participate in this fundraiser, NOR will they have access or be privy to the database prior to the random number selection which will be time stamped by the program and dated.
If all 1500 pledge squares have not been assigned, then the 150 unique numbers will be drawn from only those pledge squares that have been assigned. IF all 1500 squares are assigned, CPCRN will be giving as an appreciation gift one gift per every 10 squares filled. If only 1000 squares are assigned, the odds of being gifted becomes one in 5 per square that bears your name. ALL 150 gifts will be given, regardless of the number of squares assigned with individual names.
Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network has assigned a non-CPCRN Board member and trusted individual who has been given a "RANDOM SELECTION PROGRAM", which will provide a time stamped and dated list of the programs randomly selected numbers based on the amount of squares with names [i.e. if we have 772 pledges, the Random Selection program will be programmed to select 150 lucky gift recipients and give us the list IN SELECTION ORDER from 1 to 772. This individual will have NO knowledge of our donations database or who has been assigned what number(s) or pledge squares, and WILL NOT pledge in this fundraiser.
This fundraiser will close and a match with the Random Selection program will be made when the closing date and time, as mentioned above has been met. If we pledge over our goal of 1500 squares, additional gifts will be added to maintain the 1 in 10 winning ratio. The additional gifts will be duplicates of ones shown above.
Once the fundraiser closes, the following will occur: The random selection program, when run, will show the results to the person but also automatically email the results to the following addresses:

Most items will be mailed out within two weeks after you have been notified of your win AND we have received your full donation. If your item needs to be personalized in any way (embroidered items, size specification, reservations, etc.) you have 30 days after notification of your win to provide any required information, unless otherwise noted in the gift description. If not, the item will be forfeited and donated back to CPCRN.
CPCRN'S NLOL will only ship to the USA and Canada. CPCRN reserves the right to charge additional postage charges to Canadian winners due to the increased fees to ship to Canada. Recipient is responsible for any customs or duty charges. CPCRN cannot be responsible for non delivery to a Canadian address - items cannot be insured nor tracked internationally.
CPCRN generally has incentives on its Cairn Rescue Mentoring Yahoo Group during the running of the NLOL. Only entries from those on the group on incentive day will be eligible to win the incentive - winner choice will be done using the same random number generator as on the final prize selection. All other rules apply to all incentive prizes.
