Against the Tide

Each New Leash starts with stories of cairns taken in by Col. Potter, sad little ones who need our help.

In these economic times, they are the lucky ones. As people lose their homes and move into different circumstances, sometimes there is no room for the family dog. Some people contact us, some leave the dog on the street and the shelter contacts us before the dog has to be PTS.

As the economy slows, more and more commercial breeders are in serious economic trouble and are getting rid of 'their stock'. Some at auction, some by direct sales, some by putting them to death. When the dogs are lucky, the family or the breeder contacts Col. Potter for help with their cairns, and so far, we have been able to be there.

We can only take dogs into care when three things are in place - we need enough foster homes to care for them, we need enough money to care for them, and we need enough approved applications to expect we can adopt dogs out. Generally we take mill dogs in in groups, so we need to be extra careful of these needs. We recently had a group of 18 dogs come in all at once. This sort of intake stretches the entire group.

Our Intakes group makes sure we have that number of foster homes available. They work with our transport team to arrange vetting and transport to those homes. And our Foster home group makes sure the support system is in place for all the foster families with their new dogs. Foster Homes Groups also makes sure the reports are done in a timely manner so the dogs can be available for adoption as soon as possible.

Our adoptive groups - Communications, Home Safety, Placement Services, and Post Adoption work the applications as quickly as possible so we can have adoptive homes ready for all the dogs in care.

2008 has been an amazing year for CPCRN - we've had months where we've adopted out over 51 dogs, and months where we have taken nearly that many in. So far, as of Oct 29, we've taken in 350 dogs and adopted out 323. Adopting out more than a dog a day is terrific, it's only sad that more than one cairn a day needed to come in as well.

We currently have almost 150 dogs in care right now. Many still need their spay or neuter, only the most recent still need their shots. Some are in need of sponsors to help pay the extra charges for their health care

Our A New Leash On Life fundraisers are some of our most successful ways of bringing in the money we need to help these dogs. It is how we translate item donations into the cold hard cash we need for veterinary bills and other charges. We realize times are hard for many and we are very thankful for all the support we receive that lets us continue to help the cairns in these troubled times.

The dogs pictured here are all recent intakes. The Freedom Flyers are part of a group of 18 dogs who came in all at once. They came from a miller who said they wanted to 'get out of cairns'. Dollar came to us as part of a 'bailout' when a miller failed their USDA inspection and had to get rid of the dogs immediately. Kestrel came to us from a mill and she is extremely timid. Reading came to us as one of the School Kids group - and is learning to be all the cairn she can be! One of her first lessons was how nice it felt to be groomed neatly. Handcrafted Cairn Terrier Tote w/ Wheaten Cairn!
How about a handcrafted tote with a pieced wheaten Cairn on a quilted front pocket. This tote was made by a crafty Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network volunteer! The tote is 14 1/2" tall, 4" deep and 15" wide. The front pocket is 8 1/2" x 8 1/2". The straps are a long 37", great to use as a shoulder tote! There is an inner pocket that is 8 1/2" tall in two sections that runs the entire width of the bag. Cotton/ Polyester mix; machine wash delicate, tumble dry. This fundraiser is devoted to specifically helping in the procurement,
vetting and foster care of Puppy Mill breeding dogs and other Mill surrender dogs.

Col Potter Cairn Rescue Network is an IRS registered 501(c)3 Charity.

These are the rules:

Our Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network's A New Leash On Life XIII Fundraiser will start on Wednesday, October 29th, 2008 at 9:00 AM EDT and close on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at 9:00 PM EST.
For every $15 donation or like quantity thereof [i.e. a donation of $60.00 would entitle a donor to have their name placed in four squares] a pledge square or squares will be assigned to the donor, numbered between 1 and 1500. Pledged squares are assigned sequentially as donations are received. Specific number(s) cannot be requested by the donor. Your pledge square numbers will be e-mailed to you upon processing your donation submission and entry into our A New Leash On Life Pledge database. All donations must be received within 30 days after the close of the fundraiser, otherwise your entry will be voided and any gifts you may have won will be forfeited. CPCRN does not send statements.
When making your donation, you will be asked to list your top 10 choices in gifts. Once submitted, gift requests cannot be changed. CPCRN reserves the right to choose for you if all your gift choices were previously won. We hope you like it, there will be no changes once the award has been announced. There is no guarantee that the gift you win will be the most valuable.
Donations to this fundraiser are not tax deductible. Per the IRS: Contributions you cannot deduct at all include...the cost of raffles, bingo, or other games of chance. You cannot deduct contributions that you give to qualified organizations if, as a result, you receive or expect to receive a financial or economic benefit equal to the contribution.
Gift selection has been automated with the following rules:
- If by chance, the New Leash has over 1500 pledges, CPCRN will add prizes to maintain the 1 in 10 chance of receiving a gift. These additional items are usually duplicates of other prizes already shown.
- If your pledge square is drawn, three passes will be made to determine which gift you will receive. All passes will go in order of the Winners Selection Listing. Gift searching stops for your square once a gift has been awarded.
- Pass 1: You will be awarded the top gift still available from your wish list. If your top available gift is "Donate Gift Back to CPCRN" then your gift search stops, and this is considered your selection. If your top available gift is "Pick For Me" or if all of your wish list items that are associated with that pledge square were previously selected by prior winners, then gift selection will be attempted during "Pass 3".
- Pass 2: All winners who did not have a gift selected in Pass 1 will have our database checked for alternate gift selections on different squares assigned to the same name. (If you use a nickname one time, and your full name the next, we will NOT associate them.) If any of these squares are associated with gifts that have not yet been awarded, the highest ranking available gift will be chosen for you. If gifts are available on more than one square at the same level, the choice between them is random. If all gifts on every square belonging to unique name are not available, then gift selection will occur during Pass 3.
- Pass 3: All those that do not already have a gift selection will be randomly assigned a gift via a random number generator.
$15 donation for a pledge square is a suggested donation. You may receive a pledge square without donating. Send a request to ANLOL@CairnRescue.com and include all the information requested on the donation form along with your list of 10 choices in the email or we will use 'Pick for Me' as your choice.
This fundraiser is open to all individuals over 21 years of age, including CPCRN Board Members, Directors, Group leaders or managers alike with one exception. The person who will run the random selection program to pull 150 unique pledge square numbers will not be allowed to participate in this fundraiser, NOR will they have access or be privy to the database prior to the random number selection which will be time stamped by the program and dated.
If all 1500 pledge squares have not been assigned, then the 150 unique numbers will be drawn from only those pledge squares that have been assigned. IF all 1500 squares are assigned, CPCRN will be giving as an appreciation gift one gift per every 10 squares filled. If only 1000 squares are assigned, the odds of being gifted becomes one in 5 per square that bears your name. ALL 150 gifts will be given, regardless of the number of squares assigned with individual names.
Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network has assigned a non-CPCRN Board member and trusted individual who has been given a "RANDOM SELECTION PROGRAM", which will provide a time stamped and dated list of the programs randomly selected numbers based on the amount of squares with names [i.e. if we have 772 pledges, the Random Selection program will be programmed to select 150 lucky gift recipients and give us the list IN SELECTION ORDER from 1 to 772. This individual will have NO knowledge of our donations database or who has been assigned what number(s) or pledge squares, and WILL NOT pledge in this fundraiser.
This fundraiser will close and a match with the Random Selection program will be made when the closing date and time, as mentioned above has been met. If we pledge over our goal of 1500 squares, additional gifts will be added to maintain the 1 in 10 winning ratio. The additional gifts will be duplicates of ones shown above.
Once the fundraiser closes, the following will occur: The random selection program, when run, will show the results to the person but also automatically email the results to the following addresses:

The results will be promptly posted on this page and sent to CRM.

If your item needs to be personalized in any way (embroidered items, size specification, reservations, etc.) you have 30 days after notification of your win to provide any required information, unless otherwise noted in the gift description. If not, the item will be forfeited and donated back to CPCRN.
Non - US Shipping: CPCRN reserves the right to charge any winner having their item sent to a foreign country the difference between postage within the USA and to the country which this item is being sent. Recipient is responsible for any customs or duty charges.
CPCRN generally has incentives on its Cairn Rescue Mentoring Yahoo Group during the running of the NLOL. Only entries from those on the group on incentive day will be eligible to win the incentive - winner choice will be done using the same random number generator as on the final prize selection. All other rules apply to all incentive prizes.
