In Our Hearts Forever

 

Every once in while, a Mill Mama Rescue dog climbs through your senses directly into your Heart and takes up permanent residence. That is how it is for all of us at Colonel Potter in regards to Dina. She arrived in our hearts in 2008.

When you stop to realize that Dina had 9 years of puppy mill living conditions; this is nothing short of a miracle. Her injuries were so bad, and the true extent was unknown, that we worried if we were truly helping her by taking her into care. The other photo taken is of Dina in foster care in Ohio. Dina's journey is followed closely by each of us.

We wait for those posts on our CRM (Cairn Rescue Mentoring) group each day from her foster Mom with photos showing us her progress. The fact that Dina has made it through all this and is now learning to trust for the first time is a testimonial to Col. Potter for all its loving care given to Mill dogs that so badly need a second chance at a new beginning.

Dina is learning day by day to trust, to know the gentleness of a human's touch, and to be part of a home with other dogs in a loving home environment. Dina's injuries were extensive on the outside of her body, but now that she is recuperating from the surgery and is on the road to recovery from those injuries, her foster mom is starting to heal the damage done to a mill mama's soul. This is a challenge that our fosters take on daily.

Not all wounds show as dramatically on the outside as Dina's did. More often than not, the deep scars are hidden on the inside behind scared little faces with blank staring eyes that want to trust a human so bad but are simply just too afraid to because of the terrors they have had to endure with their experiences inside the puppy mill.

It takes love and terrier determination to help these damaged mill dogs release the emotional scars and move forward into the lives they so richly deserve. We, at Col. Potter, have so many wonderful foster families that start these angels on their very first path to knowing human touch, love and acceptance. Then, and only then, are these strong, indomitable Cairn beings ready for their forever homes with their own truly deserved family.

This is the on-going story of bravery of just one little girl that Col. Potter has saved and is being loved back to health. With your continued help in fund-raising for their medical care, we will continue to help countless more little Cairn Terriers and send them onto loving forever homes.

Dina, you have inched your way into our hearts forever!

Lexington came to us pregnant and terrified of everything and everyone. She has made very little progress, and having puppies didn't help, as Lexi was content to hide out in the whelp room and care for her babies. Lexi did seem to understand that her foster mom was there to help her and her pups, and was okay with it. The past week they have been weaning the puppies completely due to Lexi being so overprotective, plus draining her tiny body - she would nurse the puppies 24 hours a day. Lexi now has her own place in the kitchen where she can see the puppies and watch daily life in a home. She has spent most of it glued in the corner, especially when the monster man is around (foster dad). Recently, however, she was not quite as concerned with him being around all day. She actually ate when he was in the next room and came out of her corner a couple times. Normally this only happens when he is out of the house or in bed sleeping.

Lexington also visits her babies for short periods in the evening......she prefers not to be in there for long.......she is happy to check that they are okay and then wants to leave.

Last night while visiting the babies, Lexington picked up a toy and carried it around, dropped it and picked it up again. She seemed pleased with herself and acted like she wanted to get out of the puppy pen with the toy. Lexi has toys in her ex-pen, but she has never shown any interest in them or the puppies toys. Lexi got to go back to her pen with the toy she had picked out. She paced circles in the pen with the toy in her mouth, wagging her tail, looking very happy! Foster Mom's heart was smiling:) It may not seem like much, this is huge for this traumatized little girl. There has to be a little cairn attitude in there somewhere since her all her puppies seem to have very big attitudes!

Lexington - a whole new world is waiting for you!

We can only highlight a few of our mill dogs on these pages. Last we want to honor a Great General. Col. Potter rescued him from a Missouri puppy mill where he was known as Colonel for the first 10 years of captivity. Upon his rescue, Col. Potter immediately gave him a promotion where he not only became The General but was sent right to the loving arms of his foster Mom, Susan in Vermont. The General was a handsome Red Wheaton, and found an abundance of love in his foster home.

But The General's finding love didn't stop there. Somewhere in the Rocky Mountains a woman had fallen madly in love with this commanding little soul. Despite the hardship of snow storms, Robin flew from Colorado to Vermont and back to Colorado in one day so she could adopt the handsome General. The General arrived in his new forever home with his new Mom, Robin, two human sisters, Casey and Nicki, fur brother Mac and two cairn foster friends. The General was home forever. To mark the blessed adoption day The General turned 10 years' old. What a great way for a puppy mill man to celebrate his birthday!

General was cherished for 10 months by his new family. Sadly he passed away in his Mom Robin's arms, Wednesday Morning, November 21, 2007. "General went to the Rainbow Bridge this morning." said his forever Mom Robin; he was three months shy of his 11th birthday." His foster Mom Susan and Forever Mom Robin both agreed that The General's little body was too beat up after his 10 years of imprisonment in a mill.

Our entire Col. Potter family salutes this Brave General and his two loving Moms, Susan and Robin. All the love he ever knew, he knew from both of you.

Run free of pain and play at the Bridge! We are sure that The General is there, pain free, helping all the other little Cairns of lower rank cross over into sublime happiness.

General, you will never be forgotten.

Every cairn in the care of Col. Potter has their own story, and their own 'fan club' following them from intakes to adoption and beyond. We love hearing updates from their forever families because every one we have ever cared for - and we are nearing 2000 now - is in our hearts forever.

Updates on Dogs Featured in Prior New Leashes
  

Casatta has been adopted. She's found her place with a family in Arkansas and it's as if she's been with them always. She's intelligent, spunky, funny, loving...and wonderful. Her new mom looks at her and marvels that this little girl is hers. Here she is on the left with her brother, Toby, and sister, Molly, watching the birds and squirrels at the feeders.

Beacon has a new family that includes a cairn terrier brother named Jack. Her new dad tells it best: "Beacon and Jack are inseparable. It's so cute watching them walk down the hallway side-by-side as if they were physically attached to each other. Beacon has wasted no time in claiming her turf—the sofa is hers. At first she was a little skittish when it came to using the steps off the deck in the backyard, but already she is mastering them. Originally I was planning on keeping Beacon in the office and Jack in the utility room, but Beacon made it quite clear she did not like that arrangement. I moved her crate into the utility room with Jack and now there's peace again. Words cannot express the joy and happiness I've been feeling over the last several days since Beacon has joined us. With each passing day I understand more and more just how difficult it was for her foster family to let Beacon go. She's truly a gem with a loving disposition.

Wesson is now 14 yrs old! She may not be able to hear or move fast due to arthritis....... unless it is time to eat that is. And she does sleep a lot, but she still has Interests and strut her stuff for handsome portly Milo with a couple nose jabs thrown in. Mom calls her a hussy when she does this. She's not sure what a hussy is, but she guesses it means she's hot stuff!

This is the third birthday she celebrated in freedom, thanks to Col. Potter! Her Birthday wish was for many more cairns just like her to have the same chance to strut their stuff!

Of course you want a Cairn, but if you don't, you can pick some OTHER breed as shown at Dog Bark Park. Prize is a single large dog and will be ordered after the close of the NLOL to give winner choice of breed. EAch chainsaw dog is an original folk art carving made from Idaho ponderosa pine. The wood is from trees that have succumbed to natural processes of age, disease, lightning or wind. No live trees are harvested for our art. This fundraiser is devoted to specifically helping in the procurement,
vetting and foster care of Puppy Mill breeding dogs and other Mill surrender dogs.

Col Potter Cairn Rescue Network is an IRS registered 501(c)3 Charity.

These are the rules:

  • Our Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network's A New Leash On Life XII Fundraiser will start on Tuesday, July 1st, 2008 at 9:00 AM EDT and close on Sunday, August 3rd, 2008 at 9:00 PM EDT.
  • For every $15 donation or like quantity thereof [i.e. a donation of $60.00 would entitle a donor to have their name placed in four squares] a pledge square or squares will be assigned to the donor, numbered between 1 and 2000. Pledged squares are assigned sequentially as donations are received. Specific number(s) cannot be requested by the donor. Your pledge square numbers will be e-mailed to you upon processing your donation submission and entry into our A New Leash On Life Pledge database. All donations must be received within 30 days after the close of the fundraiser, otherwise your entry will be voided and any gifts you may have won will be forfeited. CPCRN does not send statements.
  • When making your donation, you will be asked to list your top 10 choices in gifts. Once submitted, gift requests cannot be changed. CPCRN reserves the right to choose for you if all your gift choices were previously won. We hope you like it, there will be no changes once the award has been announced. There is no guarantee that the gift you win will be the most valuable.
  • Donations to this A New Leash On Life (which is not a raffle) are tax deductible, but you can deduct only the amount of your contribution that exceeds the fair market value of any gift(s) you receive.
  • Gift selection has been automated with the following rules:
    • If by chance, the New Leash has over 2000 pledges, CPCRN will add prizes to maintain the 1 in 10 chance of receiving a gift. These additional items are usually duplicates of other prizes already shown.
    • If your pledge square is drawn, three passes will be made to determine which gift you will receive. All passes will go in order of the Winners Selection Listing. Gift searching stops for your square once a gift has been awarded.
    • Pass 1: You will be awarded the top gift still available from your wish list. If your top available gift is "Donate Gift Back to CPCRN" then your gift search stops, and this is considered your selection. If your top available gift is "Pick For Me" or if all of your wish list items that are associated with that pledge square were previously selected by prior winners, then gift selection will be attempted during "Pass 3".
    • Pass 2: All winners who did not have a gift selected in Pass 1 will have our database checked for alternate gift selections on different squares assigned to the same name. (If you use a nickname one time, and your full name the next, we will NOT associate them.) If any of these squares are associated with gifts that have not yet been awarded, the highest ranking available gift will be chosen for you. If gifts are available on more than one square at the same level, the choice between them is random. If all gifts on every square belonging to unique name are not available, then gift selection will occur during Pass 3.
    • Pass 3: All those that do not already have a gift selection will be randomly assigned a gift via a random number generator.
  • $15 donation for a pledge square is a suggested donation. You may receive a pledge square without donating. Send a request to ANLOL@CairnRescue.com and include all the information requested on the donation form along with your list of 10 choices in the email or we will use 'Pick for Me' as your choice.
  • This fundraiser is open to all individuals over 21 years of age, including CPCRN Board Members, Directors, Group leaders or managers alike with one exception. The person who will run the random selection program to pull 200 unique pledge square numbers will not be allowed to participate in this fundraiser, NOR will they have access or be privy to the database prior to the random number selection which will be time stamped by the program and dated.
  • If all 2000 pledge squares have not been assigned, then the 200 unique numbers will be drawn from only those pledge squares that have been assigned. IF all 2000 squares are assigned, CPCRN will be giving as an appreciation gift one gift per every 10 squares filled. If only 1000 squares are assigned, the odds of being gifted becomes one in 5 per square that bears your name. ALL 200 gifts will be given, regardless of the number of squares assigned with individual names.
  • Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network has assigned a non-CPCRN Board member and trusted individual who has been given a "RANDOM SELECTION PROGRAM", which will provide a time stamped and dated list of the programs randomly selected numbers based on the amount of squares with names [i.e. if we have 772 pledges, the Random Selection program will be programmed to select 200 lucky gift recipients and give us the list IN SELECTION ORDER from 1 to 772. This individual will have NO knowledge of our donations database or who has been assigned what number(s) or pledge squares, and WILL NOT pledge in this fundraiser.
  • This fundraiser will close and a match with the Random Selection program will be made when the closing date and time, as mentioned above has been met. If we pledge over our goal of 2000 squares, additional gifts will be added to maintain the 1 in 10 winning ratio. The additional gifts will be duplicates of ones shown above.
  • Once the fundraiser closes, the following will occur: The random selection program, when run, will show the results to the person but also automatically email the results to the following addresses:

    • The individual who will run the Random Selection program
  • The results will be promptly posted on this page and sent to CRM.
  • Winners will be notified of their win on this page at the bottom within 24 hours of the close of the New Leash.
  • Most items will be mailed out within two weeks after you have been notified of your win AND we have received your full donation. If your item needs to be personalized in any way (embroidered items, size specification, reservations, etc.) you have 30 days after notification of your win to provide any required information, unless otherwise noted in the gift description. If not, the item will be forfeited and donated back to CPCRN.
  • Non - US Shipping: CPCRN reserves the right to charge any winner having their item sent to a foreign country the difference between postage within the USA and to the country which this item is being sent. Recipient is responsible for any customs or duty charges.
  • CPCRN generally has incentives on its Cairn Rescue Mentoring Yahoo Group during the running of the NLOL. Only entries from those on the group on incentive day will be eligible to win the incentive - winner choice will be done using the same random number generator as on the final prize selection. All other rules apply to all incentive prizes.
