Warm in our Love

When you take in a dog from a mill, there is no telling what you will get. And generally, the younger the dog, the more likely there will be a serious health issue. This was true of our recent intake, Casatta. But we could never guess how serious her illness would turn out to be.

Casatta weighed only 6.75 pounds when she came to us. She was so small that we originally assumed she was only 4 months old. On closer examination, she looked to be about 9-10 months old. Even though she was tiny, she was a feisty little pixie, with her little pointed chin and ears and her dainty little feet.

Casatta was born without a working anus, and so she pooped and pee'ed through her vagina. Col. Potter had her taken to the University of Missouri vet hospital to see if her plumbing could be rearranged. They told us that she didn't have an opening in the anus, and so her rectum had made a right turn and was dumping her waste into her vagina to get rid of it. They wanted to operate to reroute her rectum and open up her anus. The vet was very hopeful that they could be successful. They ran blood tests, took x-rays, did contrast imaging to see where her plumbing actually went, and an EMG to see if she had any nerves/muscles in her anal sphincter. Casatta's tests were like an elimination rally; if she passed the blood tests, they would do the x-rays. If the x-rays looked good, they'd move on to the contrast imaging, and so forth.

Casatta passed all of her tests and underwent surgery on Sept. 10th. It was a rare, very complicated, and intricate procedure. There are only 2 other cases like Casatta's in the literature. At a certain point, what they were looking at didn't match anything they'd researched, and the doctor told her team, "Well, we're going to have to make it up from here!" The vet said that this tiny, tough Cairn princess did very well through her operation.

They said Casatta did not want for attention during her stay at the hospital. She was such a good sport during all of her tests and remained so sweet, that everyone was impressed and she became quite the favorite there. She even made friends with a little pit bull puppy at the hospital and they played together. He was bigger than she is, but she didn't let him get away with anything! Doesn't that sound like a Cairn princess?

Casatta was finally released from the hospital on Sept. 14th. She is getting special care from her own personal "royal" staff, as a proper Cairn princess should! She's got her Cairnitude in gear and is tired of being messed with - she just wants to be a normal Cairn princess now. She already looks so much healthier than she did. She slaps her little feet on the floor in play and your heart could just melt. You just can't help but fall for her little face and her need to cling to you for loving. She figured out how to climb out of her ex-pen and then got through a baby gate to get to her Foster Mom and her foster siblings who were in the family room. Foster Mom reports: "It looks like I've got a little pistol on my hands!"

Since Casatta came home, she's been slowly healing. She developed terrible diaper rash on her bottom and a band of scar tissue formed around her anus where the stitches were. We had to perform physical therapy to loosen it. She is going to have to relearn what it feels like when she needs to go potty and what muscles to use to make it happen.

However, her last visit at the hospital showed her to be healing well. She still struggles when she poops, but is doing much better. Now she runs and plays in the yard and has started wrestling with her foster brother. She sleeps through the night and plays tug-o-war with the toys with her 10 month old foster sister. .

Casatta loves to snuggle. When you pick her up, she will press every cell of her body as close to you as she can and tuck her little head under your chin, pressing it into your neck. When she is put back in her crate or ex-pen, she will sit and stare at you with big eyes and then raise her little chin to the sky and aroooooo to the moon! One day soon she will be fully recovered, healthy, and ready to go to her forever castle.

Obviously, Casatta's physical defects were extreme, but it was with the generous support of everyone that Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network could give this young puppy a chance at a normal life. She and the other hundred dogs in care now are Warm in Our Love, and waiting to be Warm in Yours.

Updates on Dogs Featured in Prior New Leashes

Beacon visited the doctors at the University of Missouri Vet Hospital again the end of July. The reports were positive. They were excited by her progress. She definitely has a collapsing trachea, but she's doing wonderfully. The vet said that since she was so young, it might not be a degenerative condition, but genetic. This is positive. It means she may live her whole life with this condition and not worsen - only time will tell.

Beacon will always be more susceptible to bronchial/breathing problems and those problems will be more serious when she has them, but she seems to be adapting well.

According to the vet report, Beacon is "bright, alert, and responsive. Her only abnormality was expiratory wheezing after excitement. All other physical examination findings were within normal limits." She is excellent at entertaining herself, playing with her toys and throwing them in the air to catch.

Beacon plays a game of her own invention we called "bowl hockey." After she finishes her breakfast or dinner, she flips her bowl over and starts to play. At first she'll play bow at it - and pounce on it with her feet. Then with a fierce little growl, she'll start pushing it around her exercise pen. Round and round she goes, pushing her bowl and growling at it. She thinks it's great fun!

Originally we thought she would end up being a little hot-house flower, having to be protected from everything. Not so! She's a little rough and tumble girl now! And surprisingly, for the most part she does pretty well at self-regulating. We have to remind everybody occasionally to "Take a Break" when the wrestling gets too wild, but they do really well. Beacon is a happy, friendly 9 month old puppy who's always ready to run and play. She doesn't have any agendas and she doesn't pout; she's always cheerful. She's a busy, happy little Cairn puppy. She loves life, she loves playing and toys, she loves her foster brothers and sisters, and she loves her people.

We only can highlight a few of our mill dogs on these pages. Davis was highlighted very early into our New Leashes. We do have some sad news. We now want to honor a mill dog that ALMOST passed in Foster Care. Davis, the Peeking Boy in NY, was adopted by his foster mom when she found out he had cancer. Davis had already known he was home. He loved his mom and followed her everywhere, dancing when it was time for dinner. He never found his whole inner cairn, but this peeking, dancing boy was in the hearts of all CPCRN when he passed. This fundraiser is devoted to specifically helping in the procurement,
vetting and foster care of Puppy Mill breeding dogs and other Mill surrender dogs.

Col Potter Cairn Rescue Network is an IRS registered 501(c)3 Charity.

These are the rules:

Our Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network's A New Leash On Life XI Fundraiser will start on Friday, October 26th, 2007 at 9:00 AM EDT and close on Sunday, November 11th, 2007 at 9:00 PM EST or sooner, if all 1500 pledge squares have been assigned sooner.
For every $15 donation or like quantity thereof [i.e. a donation of $60.00 would entitle a donor to have their name placed in four squares] a pledge square or squares will be assigned to the donor, numbered between 1 and 1500. Pledged squares are assigned sequentially as donations are received. Specific number(s) cannot be requested by the donor. Your pledge square numbers will be e-mailed to you upon processing your donation submission and entry into our A New Leash On Life XI database. All donations must be received within 30 days after the close of the fundraiser, otherwise your entry will be voided and any gifts won forfeit.
When making your donation, you will be asked to list your top 10 choices in gifts. Once submitted, gift requests cannot be changed. CPCRN reserves the right to choose for you if all your gift choices were previously won. We hope you like it, there will be no changes once the award has been announced. There is no guarantee that the gift you win will be the most valuable.
Donations to this raffle are not tax deductible. Per the IRS: Contributions you cannot deduct at all include...the cost of raffles, bingo, or other games of chance. You cannot deduct contributions that you give to qualified organizations if, as a result, you receive or expect to receive a financial or economic benefit equal to the contribution.
Gift selection has been automated with the following rules:
- If your pledge square is drawn, three passes will be made to determine which gift you will receive. All passes will go in order of the Winners Selection Listing. Gift searching stops for your square once a gift has been awarded.
- Pass 1: You will be awarded the top gift still available from your wish list. If your top available gift is "Donate Gift Back to CPCRN" then your gift search stops, and this is considered your selection. If your top available gift is "Pick For Me" or if all of your wish list items that are associated with that raffle square were previously selected by prior winners, then gift selection will be attempted during "Pass 3".
- Pass 2: All winners who did not have a gift selected in Pass 1 will have our database checked for alternate gift selections on different squares assigned to the same name. (If you use a nickname one time, and your full name the next, we will NOT associate them.) If any of these squares are associated with gifts that have not yet been awarded, the highest ranking available gift will be chosen for you. If gifts are available on more than one square at the same level, the choice between them is random. If all gifts on every square belonging to unique name are not available, then gift selection will occur during Pass 3.
- Pass 3: All those that do not already have a gift selection will be randomly assigned a gift via a random number generator.
$15 donation for a pledge square is a suggested donation. You may receive one pledge square per request without donating. Send a request to anlol@cairnrescue.com and include all the information requested on the donation form along with your list of 10 choices in the email or we will use 'Pick for Me' as your choice.
This fundraiser is open to all individuals over 21 years of age, including CPCRN Board Members, Directors, Group leaders or managers alike with one exception. The person who will run the random selection program to pull 150 unique pledge square numbers will not be allowed to participate in this fundraiser, NOR will they have access or be privy to the database prior to the random number selection which will be time stamped by the program and dated.
If all 1500 pledge squares have not been assigned, then the 150 unique numbers will be drawn from only those pledge squares that have been assigned. IF all 1500 squares are assigned, CPCRN will be giving as an appreciation gift one gift per every 15 squares filled. If only 500 squares are assigned, the odds of being gifted becomes one in 5 per square that bears your name. ALL 150 gifts will be given, regardless of the number of squares assigned with individual names.
Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network has assigned a non-CPCRN Board member and trusted individual who has been given a "RANDOM SELECTION PROGRAM", which will provide a time stamped and dated list of the programs randomly selected numbers based on the amount of squares with names [i.e. if we have 772 pledges, the Random Selection program will be programmed to select 150 lucky gift recipients and give us the list IN SELECTION ORDER from 1 to 772. This individual will have NO knowledge of our donations database or who has been assigned what number(s) or pledge squares, and WILL NOT pledge in this fundraiser.
This fundraiser will close and a match with the Random Selection program will be made when EITHER of the following occurs : 1) ALL 1500 squares have been assigned a name OR 2) The closing date and time, as mentioned above has been met. IF by chance, the 1500 square goal has been met, an absolute time frame will be promptly set for BOTH the individual who will run the Random Selection program AND the volunteer who is keeping the database, and an earlier drawing will be announced on Cairn Rescue Mentoring.
Once the fundraiser closes, the following will occur: The random selection program, when run, will show the results to the person but also automatically email the results to the following addresses:

- The individual who will run the Random Selection program
The results will be promptly posted on this page and sent to CRM.
Winners will be notified of their win on this page at the bottom within 24 hours of the close of the New Leash.
Most items will be mailed out within two weeks after you have been notified of your win and we have received your full donation. If your item needs to be personalized in any way (embroidered items, size specification, reservations, etc.) you have 30 days after notification of your win to provide any required information, unless otherwise noted in the gift description. If not, the item will be forfeited and donated back to CPCRN.
Non - US Shipping: CPCRN reserves the right to charge any winner having their item sent to a foreign country the difference between postage within the USA and to the country which this item is being sent. Recipient is responsible for any customs or duty charges.
