Safe in Our Arms

Subzero winds nipped at her ears and bit through her stinking, matted fur. She shivered and huddled at the back of her wire crate as it was being loaded up and transported once again on that frigid winter day. But she was quivering more from fear than from the bitter weather. After years in an unheated building, she was used to being unbearably cold in the winter. She was also accustomed to hunger pangs and the terrible aching in her rotting teeth and the discomfort caused by the blackened skin on her ears and tummy. She cowered as human hands reached for her cage. In her nine long years in the puppy-producing industry, she had never known human hands to be kind. They had often cuffed her and hoisted her painfully by the scruff and left her tiny body aching. She could not imagine that there might be comfort in the touch of human hands or safety in a human's arms. Nor did she know, as she sat trembling in her crate that night, that she was about to be cradled in the gentle hands of a Col Potter volunteer. She was now Safe in Our Arms.
The several pitifully neglected Cairns rescued from the mills that day were named for Chicago Bears legends. They are: Sweetness (for Walter Payton), Piccolo, Sayres, Halas, Ditka, Lovie, Butkus, and Nagurski. She was dubbed Miss Urlacher. When she arrived at CP, it was discovered that after already delivering an estimated 15 litters of puppies in her nine years of life, she could be expecting one last litter. Because of her advanced age, her pregnancy was being closely monitored and her foster family is committed to getting her as healthy as possible. We had a sonogram done to verify the pregnancy and it was just discovered that she is NOT pregnant, but that her liver is enlarged - so we will now be having liver testing done for her.
For Miss Urlacher and Da other Bears, cold hungry nights are being replaced with warm soft beds, medical care, and the delightful discovery of gentle humans. One by one, they will slowly make the transformation from cowering dogs with frightened eyes into joyful Cairns savoring the good life with their human companions. But the road in between can entail extensive medical bills. Puppy mill Cairns often come to CP with worms, flea infestations or severe and painful ear infections. Their bodies are frequently scarred and malnourished. Some face life-threatening conditions and long-term recovery.
Col. Potter has never turned its back on a Cairn in need, no matter how expensive those needs might be. We are able to provide a safe haven for them and meet their medical needs because of the generosity of people like you. Thank you for making it possible for Urlacher and the rest of Da Bears to come in out of the frozen night and end up SAFE IN OUR ARMS…..

Updates on Dogs Featured in Prior New Leashes
  
Our Home for the Holidays New Leash featured several new moms, believed to be surrendered to Col Potter because the breeder doubted that these Cairns would survive their pregnancy. Hattie [delivered Shelby, Maycay, Becker, Chaney and Wiley Coyote], Valerie [Johnboy, Michael and Erickson], Kylee [Snuckles and Sandia], and Babcia [Kearny, Munchy, Ninji, and Korkeer] had all recently delivered their pups. Today all eighteen Cairns have their own Forever Homes. Babcia's foster mom reported that "she has the best home possible…Babcia couldn't take her eyes off her new Dad…she's already in big love. She's a friendly little girl to most everyone, but she was happy to curl up in their lap right off the bat….I was thrilled to have them adopt her."
Kylee's pup Sandia, now named Newton, is the exuberant companion of a new CP volunteer. The circle of rescue is completed when Forever Families, after adopting a CP Cairn, contact us to volunteer their skills in the ongoing effort to help even more Cairns in Need. In the previous NLOL, Harold, Osage and Delaware were shown cowering in fear, so typical of the reaction of newly rescued puppy mill dogs. Harry was especially lucky to have ended up adopted into the fur herd of a long-time CP volunteer, where he is daily discovering the joy of being a pampered Cairn. Osage is reveling in a Forever Home in the sunny Southwest. Flynn remains in foster care, waiting for his forever home to find him.

Unfortunately, Delaware still faces a difficult road. Nine years old, she was left deaf by chronic untreated ear infections during her years as breeder's stock, and one ear is permanently crumpled. Her foster family is teaching her hand signals, which she readily obeys. Having suffered years of neglect, sweet Delaware shows signs of longing to be loved, yet understandably still shies from receiving affection. Gentle Delaware is waiting for a special Forever Home where she can continue to discover that she is now safe and loved. Her special needs, and the devotion of her foster family, are just another example of the dedicated rescue work performed daily at CP. To read more about Delaware, Click Here
We do have an update from Jordan's Forever Mom: 'I am glad the weather has warmed up a little. Our dogs are happier going outside, Jordan sometimes doesn't want to come in. He likes to come close to the door and then he stands, and scratchs his belly with his hind leg and then he has to think, and then he has to stretch, and then he has to think, sometimes he is ready to come in, sometimes he likes to scratch again." '

The Barn Patrol
This limited edition print is numbered 116/730 and is by Mike Sibley. It is 17"×11½". This drawing shows cairns fulfilling their natural role - patrolling the barn for vermin. This fundraiser is devoted to specifically helping in the procurement,
vetting and foster care of Puppy Mill breeding dogs and other Mill surrender dogs.

Col Potter Cairn Rescue Network is an IRS registered 501(c)3 Charity.

These are the rules:

  • Our Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network's A New Leash On Life IX Fundraiser will start on Friday, March 9th, 2007 at 9:00 AM EST and close on Sunday, March 18th, 2007 at 9:00 PM EDT.
  • For every $15 donation or like quantity thereof [i.e. a donation of $60.00 would entitle a donor to have their name placed in four squares] a pledge square or squares will be assigned to the donor, numbered between 1 and 1000. Pledged squares are assigned sequentially as donations are received. Specific number(s) cannot be requested by the donor. Your pledge square numbers will be e-mailed to you upon processing your donation submission and entry into our A New Leash On Life IX database. All donations must be received within 30 days after the close of the fundraiser, otherwise your entry will be voided and any gifts you may have won will be forfeited. CPCRN does not send statements.
  • When making your donation, you will be asked to list your top 10 choices in gifts. Once submitted, gift requests cannot be changed. CPCRN reserves the right to choose for you if all your gift choices were previously won. We hope you like it, there will be no changes once the award has been announced. There is no guarantee that the gift you win will be the most valuable.
  • Donations to this A New Leash On Life (which is not a raffle) are tax deductible, but you can deduct only the amount of your contribution that exceeds the fair market value of any gift(s) you receive.
  • Gift selection has been automated with the following rules:
    • If by chance, the New Leash has over 1000 pledges, CPCRN will add prizes to maintain the 1 in 10 chance of receiving a gift. These additional items are usually duplicates of other prizes already shown.
    • If your pledge square is drawn, three passes will be made to determine which gift you will receive. All passes will go in order of the Winners Selection Listing. Gift searching stops for your square once a gift has been awarded.
    • Pass 1: You will be awarded the top gift still available from your wish list. If your top available gift is "Donate Gift Back to CPCRN" then your gift search stops, and this is considered your selection. If your top available gift is "Pick For Me" or if all of your wish list items that are associated with that pledge square were previously selected by prior winners, then gift selection will be attempted during "Pass 3".
    • Pass 2: All winners who did not have a gift selected in Pass 1 will have our database checked for alternate gift selections on different squares assigned to the same name. (If you use a nickname one time, and your full name the next, we will NOT associate them.) If any of these squares are associated with gifts that have not yet been awarded, the highest ranking available gift will be chosen for you. If gifts are available on more than one square at the same level, the choice between them is random. If all gifts on every square belonging to unique name are not available, then gift selection will occur during Pass 3.
    • Pass 3: All those that do not already have a gift selection will be randomly assigned a gift via a random number generator.
  • $15 donation for a pledge square is a suggested donation. You may receive a pledge square without donating. Send a request to ANLOL@CairnRescue.com and include all the information requested on the donation form along with your list of 10 choices in the email or we will use 'Pick for Me' as your choice.
  • This fundraiser is open to all individuals over 21 years of age, including CPCRN Board Members, Directors, Group leaders or managers alike with one exception. The person who will run the random selection program to pull 100 unique pledge square numbers will not be allowed to participate in this fundraiser, NOR will they have access or be privy to the database prior to the random number selection which will be time stamped by the program and dated.
  • If all 1000 pledge squares have not been assigned, then the 100 unique numbers will be drawn from only those pledge squares that have been assigned. IF all 1000 squares are assigned, CPCRN will be giving as an appreciation gift one gift per every 15 squares filled. If only 500 squares are assigned, the odds of being gifted becomes one in 5 per square that bears your name. ALL 100 gifts will be given, regardless of the number of squares assigned with individual names.
  • Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network has assigned a non-CPCRN Board member and trusted individual who has been given a "RANDOM SELECTION PROGRAM", which will provide a time stamped and dated list of the programs randomly selected numbers based on the amount of squares with names [i.e. if we have 772 pledges, the Random Selection program will be programmed to select 100 lucky gift recipients and give us the list IN SELECTION ORDER from 1 to 772. This individual will have NO knowledge of our donations database or who has been assigned what number(s) or pledge squares, and WILL NOT pledge in this fundraiser.
  • This fundraiser will close and a match with the Random Selection program will be made when the closing date and time, as mentioned above has been met. If we pledge over our goal of 1000 squares, additional gifts will be added to maintain the 1 in 10 winning ratio. The additional gifts will be duplicates of ones shown above.
  • Once the fundraiser closes, the following will occur: The random selection program, when run, will show the results to the person but also automatically email the results to the following addresses:

    • The individual who will run the Random Selection program
  • The results will be promptly posted on this page and sent to CRM.
  • Winners will be notified of their win on this page at the bottom within 24 hours of the close of the New Leash.
  • Most items will be mailed out within two weeks after you have been notified of your win and we have received your full donation. If your item needs to be personalized in any way (embroidered items, size specification, reservations, etc.) you have 30 days after notification of your win to provide any required information, unless otherwise noted in the gift description. If not, the item will be forfeited and donated back to CPCRN.
  • Non - US Shipping: CPCRN reserves the right to charge any winner having their item sent to a foreign country the difference between postage within the USA and to the country which this item is being sent. Recipient is responsible for any customs or duty charges.
  • CPCRN generally has incentives on its Cairn Rescue Mentoring Yahoo Group during the running of the NLOL. All entries on incentive day will be eligible to win the incentive - winner choice will be done using the same random number generator as on the final prize selection. All other rules apply to all incentive prizes.
