Subzero winds nipped at her ears and bit through her stinking, matted fur. She shivered and huddled at the back of her wire crate as it was being loaded up and transported once again on that frigid winter day. But she was quivering more from fear than from the bitter weather. After years in an unheated building, she was used to being unbearably cold in the winter. She was also accustomed to hunger pangs and the terrible aching in her rotting teeth and the discomfort caused by the blackened skin on her ears and tummy. She cowered as human hands reached for her cage. In her nine long years in the puppy-producing industry, she had never known human hands to be kind. They had often cuffed her and hoisted her painfully by the scruff and left her tiny body aching. She could not imagine that there might be comfort in the touch of human hands or safety in a human's arms. Nor did she know, as she sat trembling in her crate that night, that she was about to be cradled in the gentle hands of a Col Potter volunteer. She was now Safe in Our Arms.
The several pitifully neglected Cairns rescued from the mills that day were named for Chicago Bears legends. They are: Sweetness (for Walter Payton), Piccolo, Sayres, Halas, Ditka, Lovie, Butkus, and Nagurski. She was dubbed Miss Urlacher. When she arrived at CP, it was discovered that after already delivering an estimated 15 litters of puppies in her nine years of life, she could be expecting one last litter. Because of her advanced age, her pregnancy was being closely monitored and her foster family is committed to getting her as healthy as possible. We had a sonogram done to verify the pregnancy and it was just discovered that she is NOT pregnant, but that her liver is enlarged - so we will now be having liver testing done for her.
For Miss Urlacher and Da other Bears, cold hungry nights are being replaced with warm soft beds, medical care, and the delightful discovery of gentle humans. One by one, they will slowly make the transformation from cowering dogs with frightened eyes into joyful Cairns savoring the good life with their human companions. But the road in between can entail extensive medical bills. Puppy mill Cairns often come to CP with worms, flea infestations or severe and painful ear infections. Their bodies are frequently scarred and malnourished. Some face life-threatening conditions and long-term recovery.
Our Home for the Holidays New Leash featured several new moms, believed to be surrendered to Col Potter 
because the breeder doubted that these Cairns would survive their pregnancy. Hattie [delivered Shelby, Maycay, Becker, Chaney and Wiley Coyote], Valerie [Johnboy, Michael and Erickson], Kylee [Snuckles and Sandia], and Babcia [Kearny, Munchy, Ninji, and Korkeer] had all recently delivered their pups. Today all eighteen Cairns have their own Forever Homes. Babcia's foster mom reported that "she has the best home possible…Babcia couldn't take her eyes off her new Dad…she's already in big love. She's a friendly little girl to most everyone, but she was happy to curl up in their lap right off the bat….I was thrilled to have them adopt her."
Kylee's pup Sandia, now named Newton, is the exuberant companion of a new CP volunteer. In the previous NLOL, Harold, Osage and Delaware were shown cowering in fear, so typical of the reaction of newly rescued puppy mill dogs. Harry was especially lucky to have ended up adopted into the fur herd of a long-time CP volunteer, where he is daily discovering the joy of being a pampered Cairn.
