We talk about the Luck of the Irish, but nothing beats the luck of a puppy mill dog that comes into the care of Col. Potter... From now on , they'll be Cairns in Clover!

This March, we pulled 12 cairns from a commercial breeder. While we were not permitted back where all the hundreds of dogs were kept, we could see a little of where these poor souls were kept. Basically they are in cages stacked at least 3 to 4 tiers high under a roofed building with no walls exposed to all weather. Once we arrived at the vet, we could get a better look at them all. 3 had chain collars on that were to the point of choking them. We cut these off immediately. They all are filthy and the males are terribly matted. A couple of the females have skin problems and a couple have eye infections.

These are some of the dogs helped by this fundraiser.
Mancuso - Intakes

Can you imagine waiting eight years for your first hug? Or having fourteen pregnancies in less than a decade? This was life in the commercial breeding facility for Mancuso, nicknamed "Meeka." She is one of twelve "Olympic Kids" newly rescued by CPCRN and transported to a loving foster home.

At eight years old, she is expecting yet another litter of puppies, which will be her last before she enters a well-earned retirement. She is finally receiving the medical care every mother-to-be should have and was treated for an eye infection as well. Despite her life of neglect, Meeka seems to understand that she is now among people who care. She even gave a little kiss to the vet tech who drew blood from her at her most recent appointment. Such a loving heart after years of being unloved herself.

But of all the new experiences she has discovered, including soft blankies and kind voices, the attention Meeka has enjoyed the most came from the groomer. Mancuso after groomingAfter nearly a decade of living in squalid conditions in a cage that was exposed to the weather, Meeka got her own personal makeover including a bath and a blow-dry. For the first time in her life, she felt -and looked- beautiful and cared-for. Even though she had been a little afraid of the groomer, she was very pleased with her new look and spent some time parading around the yard, showing off. And who could blame her? Under that matted fur was a true beauty just waiting for a chance to shine.

But a difficult road still lies ahead of Meeka. At her age, her pregnancy will require close supervision, as her body is worn out from years of producing puppies. Her due date has not yet been determined, but she is too far along to abort the puppies. It is also known that she is expecting at least two puppies. And this time, when she gives birth, she will be surrounded by the love and prayers of people who care about her.

Another of the "Olympic Kids" is Jacobellis, nicknamed "Jacky" by her foster mom. She is typical of the condition in which many commercial breeder dogs arrive at our doorstep. Dirty and matted on the outside and fearful on the inside, Jacky began her stay in foster care in her crate howling forlornly.

Commercial Breeder survivors have not known kindness from humans before being rescued. Jacky has never been cuddled or given little squeaky toys. Her life has been spent outdoors in an exposed cage, producing puppies and struggling to get her share of the daily rations of food and water. Although she is far from her senior years, she has already lost several teeth to neglect. Newly arrived at foster care, Jacky has spent much time hiding in her crate, observing the unfamiliar sights of life indoors and trying to decide if humans are to be trusted.

Slowly she will learn that people can be kind and that life can be good. She will discover toys and tummy rubs and life without fear.

It is your contributions to A New Leash on Life that gives dogs like Meeka and Jacobellis the chance at a better life. These "Olympians" will have many hurdles to overcome, but now they have the opportunity at a Golden Life.

Wesson

Last time, we introduced Wesson and asked for your prayers and support for this senior Cairn who came to us suffering from severe ear infections. Wesson is still in foster care in MO and is slowly regaining her health. She has been on medication for her ears and also requires special baths to alleviate the itchy skin that plagues her. This winter, she had to return to the vet for a little tummy trouble, but bounced back from that, quickly regaining her appetite. She continues to improve, tho is not yet ready for adoption.

Wesson is learning to enjoy tummy rubs and cuddles with her foster parents and has developed a fondness for stuffed toys. This Christmas, among other gifts, she received a special blankie, which she treasures. She is still a little afraid in new situations, but overall is adjusting very well to life in a home. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to make Wesson's medical care possible and who have kept her in your prayers as she struggled to survive. Because of your support, Wesson is enjoying her golden years in the comfort and happiness that was denied her for so long.

Sterling Silver Bracelet

This darling Cairn Terrier Dog bracelet is open cuff style. The large sterling silver bracelet weighs a whopping 55 grams of glowing dark silver. It is 7 inches long, but is open cuff style, so it can be opened to approx. 8 inches for a large wrist or tightened down to approx. 6 inches long. The bracelet is 1-3/8 inches wide in the front, and narrows to approx. 1 inch wide in the open back.

Wheel Thrown Pottery Cairn Jar
This jar can be used for cookies or anything else your heart desires. 6"-8" tall without lids, 8"-10" tall with lids, 4"-5" in diameter. Both jar and lid were hand thrown on the potter's wheel with a dark clay and high-fire glazed with the "drizzle" look. The drizzles allow the raw dark clay to show throughout. The inside of the urn is solid Caribbean Sea Green. There is a silhouette of a Cairn Terrier on the lid for accent. This piece is dishwasher safe, functional, decorative, lead-free, hand thrown, signed by the artist, and ONE-OF-A-KIND.

This is a absolutely adorable Vaseline Carnival Glass Duke Scottie Dog by Boyd Art Glass. This little "Scottie" measures 2 3/8" tall and carries the Boyd Art Glass mark. Uranium Oxide is added to the glass making it glow under a black light. The carnival irridescence brings out a rainbow of colors that seems to come alive. Eclectic Corner Toy Box
This terrific toy box is made of Solid Pine with a Luann bottom. It is 18" square X 7" deep - that's plenty of room for TONS of toys! Hand holes are routed on each side for easy carrying and to allow you to slide it into smaller spots. Sides will be dovetailed so there will be no nails or extraneous things for dogs to get in their mouths. You have a choice of 'Cairn Toys' or a 'Paw Print' design. Missy and the toys are NOT part of the gift.
And there is one caveat... just because you put the toys IN the box, does not mean they will STAY there!

This fundraiser is devoted to specifically helping in the procurement,
vetting and foster care of Puppy Mill breeding dogs and other Mill surrender dogs.

Col Potter Cairn Rescue Network is an IRS registered 501(c)3 Charity.
Our donation response letter contains information about tax eligibility.

These are the rules:

  • Our Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network's A New Leash On Life VI Fundraiser will start on Friday, March 17th, 2006 at 9:00 AM EST and close on Sunday, March 26th, 2006 at 9:00 PM EST, or sooner, if all 1000 pledge squares have been assigned sooner.
  • For every $15 donation or like quantity thereof [i.e. a donation of $60.00 would entitle a donor to have their name placed in four squares] a pledge square or squares will be assigned to the donor, numbered between 1 and 1000. Pledged squares are assigned sequentially as donations are received. Specific number(s) cannot be requested by the donor. Your pledge square numbers will be e-mailed to you upon processing your donation submission and entry into our A New Leash On Life VI database. All donations must be received within 30 days after the close of the fundraiser, otherwise your entry will be voided and any gifts won forfeit.
  • When making your donation, you will be asked to list your top 10 choices in gifts. Once submitted, gift requests cannot be changed. CPCRN reserves the right to choose for you if all your gift choices were previously won. We hope you like it, there will be no changes once the award has been announced. There is no guarantee that the gift you win will be the most valuable.
  • Gift selection has been automated with the following rules:
    • If your pledge square is drawn, three passes will be made to determine which gift you will receive. All passes will go in order of the Winners Selection Listing. Gift searching stops for your square once a gift has been awarded.
    • Pass 1: You will be awarded the top gift still available from your wish list. If your top available gift is "Donate Gift Back to CPCRN" then your gift search stops, and this is considered your selection. If your top available gift is "Pick For Me" or if all of your wish list items that are associated with that raffle square were previously selected by prior winners, then gift selection will be attempted during "Pass 2".
    • Pass 2: All winners who did not have a gift selected in Pass 1 will have our database checked for alternate gift selections on different squares assigned to the same name. (If you use a nickname one time, and your full name the next, we will NOT associate them.) If any of these squares are associated with gifts that have not yet been awarded, the highest ranking available gift will be chosen for you. If gifts are available on more than one square at the same level, the choice between them is random. If all gifts on every square belonging to unique name are not available, then gift selection will occur during Pass 3.
    • Pass 3: All those that do not already have a gift selection will be randomly assigned a gift via a random number generator.
  • $15 donation for a pledge square is a suggested donation. You may receive one pledge square per household without donating. Send a request to RaffleDonations@cairnrescue.com. If more than one request is received from the same household only the first request will be honored. Please include all the information requested on the donation form along with your list of 10 choices in the email or we will use 'Pick for Me' as your choice.
  • This fundraiser is open to all individuals over 21 years of age, including CPCRN Board Members, Directors, Group leaders or managers alike with one exception. The person who will run the random selection program to pull 100 unique pledge square numbers will not be allowed to participate in this fundraiser, NOR will they have access or be privy to the database prior to the random number selection which will be time stamped by the program and dated.
  • If all 1000 pledge squares have not been assigned, then the 100 unique numbers will be drawn from only those pledge squares that have been assigned. IF all 1000 squares are assigned, CPCRN will be giving as an appreciation gift one gift per every 10 squares filled. If only 500 squares are assigned, the odds of being gifted becomes one in 5 per square that bears your name. ALL 100 gifts will be given, regardless of the number of squares assigned with individual names.
  • Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network has assigned a non-CPCRN Board member and trusted individual who has been given a "RANDOM SELECTION PROGRAM", which will provide a time stamped and dated list of the programs randomly selected numbers based on the amount of squares with names [i.e. if we have 772 pledges, the Random Selection program will be programmed to select 100 lucky gift recipients and give us the list IN SELECTION ORDER from 1 to 772. This individual will have NO knowledge of our donations database or who has been assigned what number(s) or pledge squares, and WILL NOT pledge in this fundraiser.
  • This fundraiser will close and a match with the Random Selection program will be made when EITHER of the following occurs : 1) ALL 1000 squares have been assigned a name OR 2) The closing date and time, as mentioned above has been met. IF by chance, the 1000 square goal has been met, an absolute time frame will be promptly set for BOTH the individual who will run the Random Selection program AND the volunteer who is keeping the database, and an earlier drawing will be announced on Cairn Rescue Mentoring.
  • Once the fundraiser closes, the following will occur: The random selection program, when run, will show the results to the person but also automatically email the results to the following addresses:
    • Danielle Rackstraw, General Manager
    • RaffleDonations@cairnrescue.com
    • CairnRescueMall@cairnrescue.com
    • The individual who will run the Random Selection program
  • The results will be promptly posted on this page and sent to CRM.
  • Winners will be notified of their win, first on this page, then through their email address that was supplied when their donation was made. The email notification should be done within 3 days of closing. Actual gift notification may take longer since it is done in a first win, first pick order.
  • Most items will be mailed out within two weeks after you have been notified of your win. If your item needs to be personalized in any way (embroidered items, size specification, reservations, etc.) you have 30 days after notification of your win to provide any required information, unless otherwise noted in the gift description. If not, the item will be forfeited and donated back to CPCRN.
  • Non - US Shipping: CPCRN reserves the right to charge any winner having their item sent to a foreign country the difference between postage within the USA and to the country which this item is being sent. Recipient is responsible for any customs or duty charges.

Once the raffle closes, the winners will be posted below. We then send email notifications to these winners. Email notices will BEGIN to be sent on March 26, but it may take a couple days to complete as this is done manually. Once that is finished, we will notify our gift shippers to send the gifts out.

We had a pledge out WITH 1011 SQUARES - and since we went over 1000 squares pledged, we added TWO prizes to keep our minimum prize odds. The MAR 101 prize is a duplicate of MAR 006, and the MAR 102 prize is a second of MAR 086.
