"SAVING JUST ONE DOG
WON'T CHANGE THE WORLD,
BUT IT SURELY WILL CHANGE THE WORLD
FOR THAT ONE DOG".

Let Freedom Ring

Somewhere today in this free country, a prisoner sits in a small cell. Her cramped quarters are freezing in the winter and sweltering in the summer. In this small space are other prisoners, some of whom threaten and intimidate her, stealing her water and gobbling up all of her meager meal. Her ear is mutilated from the fight that taught her not to try to protect her rations from the scavengers. While she lives, her only name is her number, and when she dies, nobody will care.

Her wardens are indifferent to her plight. One swears at her for crying and the others pretend not to hear. She is always in pain. Her feet are sore from walking on the wire mesh that constitutes her floor. Her body is weak from producing countless litters of puppies. Her skin is itchy from its constant contact with her soiled and matted coat. Her mouth is sore because of the lack of dental care and poor quality food which has caused infection. It's not uncommon for these prisoners to lose their teeth during their incarceration due to them rotting away. She is hungry and cold, afraid and unloved.

To her, life is a frightening thing, filled with hunger and discomfort. She has somehow managed to survive another winter, though she was always numb with cold, and always suffering from starvation pangs. Her normal weight should be 18 pounds, but she now weighs only 8. She knows with a dog's unerring instinct that there will be no puppies for her this year. If she had ever seen flowers, ever seen anything except the dingy interior of the shed where dozens of prison crates are stacked three and four high, she would believe that she will live to see the hyacinths bloom, but will be gone before the lavender buds. She understands that she will soon be relieved of the burden of waking up to another day of misery. The thought of dying doesn't sadden her because it offers her the only hope she has ever known: the hope of freedom from her misery.

But freedom came to her in a form she hadn't anticipated. In April 2006, this nameless girl, and several of her fellow inmates, got an unexpected pardon and found their way into the loving arms of Col Potter. Because flowers were in full bloom in the world outside her prison, she and the other newly-free Cairns were dubbed The Spring Flowers and each received an appropriate name. Hers is Hyacinth. Released with her were Tulip, Daffodil, Crocus, Iris, and Primrose, all female wheaten cairns. Jonquil, a 10-year-old male wheaten cairn, also received his freedom.

Hyacinth is now being fostered in a loving home where she is trying to regain some much-needed weight. She is terrified, food aggressive and has a long way to go before she will be able to realize that she is safe, loved and free. Although she will always bear the scars of her ordeal, including the missing ear tip, in time, and with much love, gentleness and patience, she will learn to adjust to the good life. She will discover that people can be kind, that food is not a rare commodity, and that the warm and comfortable way she feels now is not just a wonderful dream, but is her new reality. Then she will discover toys and scritches and love. And she will live to see the hyacinths bloom for many Springs to come.

Freedom rang in another puppymill for a little 4 year old wheaten Cairn suffering from severe hair loss on his face and body due to Sarcoptic Mange. Underweight and filthy, Jordan was brought into Col Potter's arms and taken to the vet for the first medical care he has ever received. While at the vet, Jordan exhibited a beautiful forgiving spirit toward mankind, eager for attention and wagging his tail whenever anyone passed by his cage.

Although he lost most of his entire coat to Mange, Jordan's face suffered the most damage. His early pictures show a truly pathetic example of neglected puppymill "stock." Jordan's face was excruciatingly itchy, and even now that he is much improved, he continues to keep shaking his head and trying to rub his face on anything he can reach. Mange left much of his skin scarred and caused some most-likely permanent discoloration of the skin on his face and ears.

Because he has spent most of his life in a kennel, Jordan's legs have almost no muscle tone and he tires easily. However, even when he is tired, his foster mom does not often pick him up because this makes him afraid. This most likely means that he, like so many other mill dogs, has had bad experiences with being picked up by people. Despite the abuse he has faced in his past life, Jordan still gives kisses and smiles and loves to cuddle up with his foster family for some affection.

Physically, Jordan continues to improve, although he still has some patches that have yet to heal over and much scarring that will never heal. His path to freedom was not an easy one. He had to be quarantined, and has had many treatments to help heal the severe mange that took most of his coat. When Jordan's intake photos were first circulated among the rescue workers, even seasoned volunteers who "have seen it all" were shocked and saddened at Jordan's pitiful state. Now he is beginning to show great improvement and regain some of his lost fur. His foster family is able to provide him with the safety, love, and fresh air that he needs, but it is people like you who make it possible for dogs like Jordan to get this far. His vet bills piled up while he was in such dire need and it is through your generosity that Col Potter is able to give these suffering souls the medical attention that they so desperately need. Freedom has many heroes, and Jordan is grateful for those who continue to make his freedom possible.
Although funds raised through this New Leash are earmarked to save puppymill survivors like Hyacinth and Jordan, we wanted to share some special stories of Cairns who have recently joined the CP family from venues besides the mills. It is unfortunate that something like this could happen to a pet, and we at Col Potter are grateful for those who help make these rescues possible as well.

At first glance, Brooke appeared to be a typical senior Cairn, but when the shelter got a better look, they realized that she had conjunctivitis and was infested with ticks. Not just one or two ticks. Not a dozen. They removed literally hundreds of ticks. And then they treated her with Frontline to try to kill the several dozen they hadn't yet had time to remove. And also her fleas.

Before contacting Col Potter, the shelter had scheduled her for spaying, but then cancelled the procedure, as her health condition was deemed too poor for surgery. She had lateral luxating patellas in both hind legs, severe dry eye, and a very bad case of seborrhea. Her coat and skin were unusually oily. Brooke's teeth were in terrible condition and many needed to be extracted. The only good news, it seemed, was that Brooke was heartworm negative and that despite earlier concerns about possible blindness, Brooke had not completely lost her sight.

Upon arriving at Col Potter, Brooke was taken to the vet to have yet more ticks removed and to get a thorough exam. One of the biggest concerns was the long list of possible diseases Brooke could have been given by the ticks, so she was put on doxycillin to eliminate that threat. It was determined that she would need a series of medicated baths, extensive bloodwork, and x-rays to check on her heart and other internal organs. When her health improves, she will also need a spay and a dental and extractions, at the very least.

Because of the extraordinary neglect she has suffered, Brooke is in need of some guardian angels to help pay the medical bills that will continue to be amassed in order to restore her to health. Her foster mom reports that despite everything, Brooke is full of spunk and is "not an 'old' 11 year old but is 'just' 11 and waiting to be reborn into a loving forever home, where, thanks to Col. Potter, she can once again perform her Cairn antics, steal someone's heart, and be their spoiled baby."

Recently, a Cairn was ruthlessly attacked by a pair of Pit Bulls. Although severely wounded, he received no medical attention. His owners allowed five days of misery to pass before they decided that he would probably not survive his ordeal. And so they dropped him off at the local animal shelter.

The shelter vet took one look at him and decreed that unless a rescue group came forward to get him immediate medical care, he would have to be put down. Col Potter's dedicated Intakes Team rescued the Cairn and got him directly to a vet. Diagnosis was difficult because his wounds were filthy and covered by maggots. One of the wounds was a gaping hole three inches in diameter on his front left leg. Seeing the extent of his injuries, the vet paused in her exam to ask whether she should continue or just put the dog to sleep. CP chose to give him the chance to make a full recovery. Knowing what that would take, he was named Miracle.

The vet put Miracle on a heavy dose of antibiotics and painkillers. He was shaved and the staff cleaned and treated the numerous injuries on his head, chest, back and legs. Many wounds had to be left open so that they could drain and start to heal with less chance of further infection. When he is strong enough to be put under again, some of the larger wounds will be sutured. Miracle has suffered nerve damage in his front legs, and it is hoped that he will regain the use of them.

Miracle is only alive today thanks to Col. Potter and the wonderful and generous people that support these little furkids. While Miracle is struggling to survive, his medical expenses continue to grow daily and he is in need of guardian angels. Miracle isn't able to say the words, but if he were, he'd say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone for helping to save his life!

And then there is Flynn, a young Cairn surrendered by his family because of a sudden change in his behavior. He exhibited several seemingly unrelated symptoms, including spinning, an unusual thirst, and aggressive behavior. Upon this little guy's arrival at Col Potter, he underwent some medical testing which showed that his problems all seem to have stemmed from a painful ear infection that was left untreated for so long that it had progressed to his inner ear. Flynn is currently undergoing treatment, but it will take more than a month before it can be determined how much lasting damage was done to his ears, and if that was the cause of his problems.
No matter how the Cairns arrive at Col Potter's, from a puppymill or a shelter or from an owner surrender, we celebrate the life of freedom that lies ahead of them. Freedom from fear, freedom from pain, freedom from neglect, and the freedom to live the good life surrounded by happiness and love. Thank you for helping to make all this possible for the innocent, suffering ones.
Updates on Dogs Featured in Prior New Leashes

Last time, we told you about a group of newly rescued mill dogs. We called them The Olympic Kids and introduced you to a couple. Here is the latest news on Meeka, Davis, and Jacky, as told by their loving foster-moms. All of the Olympic kids are reveling in their new-found freedom and are grateful for the people like you whose generous support let freedom ring for them

Mancuso (Meeka to us), was thought to be expecting at least two pups when she came into the care of Col. Potter. This was not the case. Thankfully, she was not pregnant at all. Meeka has been spayed, so her puppy-production-for-profits days are history!

Meeka did have horrible and long-untreated eye infections. While she is currently under treatment, it is now known that Meeka has much compromised vision, and in her ongoing care, we are working to save all she presently has.

Even with such a rocky start, Meeka has grabbed her chance at the Good Life with gusto. She is spunky yet shy; social but sometimes skittery.. this tiny Texas red-head is a charming enigma. ...oh yes, Meeka, who came into the Col's care, much overweight and in poor condition; is now tiny and svelte; energetic and exuberant in her new lease on life. She loves the playful company of other Cairns, but most especially seeks the comfort and companionship of her people.

Meeka owes her chance to Good and Loving hearts... like yours!

As Davis nears his 11th birthday, he is experiencing a full range of things for a mature dog. He is simply thrilled to be alive and loose. He jumps around like a newborn foal whenever he goes outside, and nags my setter with his barking.

Davis remains very skittish about actually interacting with people. While he enjoys my touch, he will avoid being touched and hates to be picked up. We are hoping that the "power of cheese" will continue to melt his barriers. Davis continues to have health issues, having a new lesion removed from his mouth last week and going back in this week for a suspicious area on his belly.

So, Davis is enjoying life and slowly taking on more challenges each day, but is a long way from the healthy, well-adjusted dog we hope for.

Jacky made rapid progress while she was with us. After some initial timidness, she learned that humans could be caring and loving and on schedule with her own food in her very own bowl! She blossomed with bright Cairn spirit and enthusiasm. Seeing her run in the grass and explore the backyard, discovering toys, and experiencing life as she had never known it was a true joy. Jacky is now happily living in the lap of luxury with her loving forever family and Cairn brother.

A chance encounter with a friendly little dog in the woods leads to her grandfather, in a magical story within the story, relating the legend of a plucky Cairn Terrier washed ashore in a ferocious Great Lakes storm in the 1800s. Eclectic Corner Toy Box

This terrific toy box is made of Solid Pine with a Luann bottom. It is 18" square X 7" deep - that's plenty of room for TONS of toys! Hand holes are routed on each side for easy carrying and to allow you to slide it into smaller spots. Sides will be dovetailed so there will be no nails or extraneous things for dogs to get in their mouths. You have a choice of 'Cairn Toys' or a 'Paw Print' design. Missy and the toys are NOT part of the gift.
And there is one caveat... just because you put the toys IN the box, does not mean they will STAY there!

THE RULES
This fundraiser is devoted to specifically helping in the procurement,
vetting and foster care of Puppy Mill breeding dogs and other Mill surrender dogs.

Col Potter Cairn Rescue Network is an IRS registered 501(c)3 Charity.
Our donation response letter contains information about tax eligibility.

These are the rules:

  • Our Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network's A New Leash On Life VII Fundraiser will start on Friday, May 26th, 2006 at 9:00 AM EDT and close on Sunday, June 4th, 2006 at 9:00 PM EDT or sooner, if all 1000 pledge squares have been assigned sooner.
  • For every $15 donation or like quantity thereof [i.e. a donation of $60.00 would entitle a donor to have their name placed in four squares] a pledge square or squares will be assigned to the donor, numbered between 1 and 1000. Pledged squares are assigned sequentially as donations are received. Specific number(s) cannot be requested by the donor. Your pledge square numbers will be e-mailed to you upon processing your donation submission and entry into our A New Leash On Life VII database. All donations must be received within 30 days after the close of the fundraiser, otherwise your entry will be voided and any gifts won forfeit.
  • When making your donation, you will be asked to list your top 10 choices in gifts. Once submitted, gift requests cannot be changed. CPCRN reserves the right to choose for you if all your gift choices were previously won. We hope you like it, there will be no changes once the award has been announced. There is no guarantee that the gift you win will be the most valuable.
  • Gift selection has been automated with the following rules:
    • If your pledge square is drawn, three passes will be made to determine which gift you will receive. All passes will go in order of the Winners Selection Listing. Gift searching stops for your square once a gift has been awarded.
    • Pass 1: You will be awarded the top gift still available from your wish list. If your top available gift is "Donate Gift Back to CPCRN" then your gift search stops, and this is considered your selection. If your top available gift is "Pick For Me" or if all of your wish list items that are associated with that raffle square were previously selected by prior winners, then gift selection will be attempted during "Pass 2".
    • Pass 2: All winners who did not have a gift selected in Pass 1 will have our database checked for alternate gift selections on different squares assigned to the same name. (If you use a nickname one time, and your full name the next, we will NOT associate them.) If any of these squares are associated with gifts that have not yet been awarded, the highest ranking available gift will be chosen for you. If gifts are available on more than one square at the same level, the choice between them is random. If all gifts on every square belonging to unique name are not available, then gift selection will occur during Pass 3.
    • Pass 3: All those that do not already have a gift selection will be randomly assigned a gift via a random number generator.
  • $15 donation for a pledge square is a suggested donation. You may receive one pledge square per household without donating. Send a request to RaffleDonations@cairnrescue.com. If more than one request is received from the same household only the first request will be honored. Please include all the information requested on the donation form along with your list of 10 choices in the email or we will use 'Pick for Me' as your choice.
  • This fundraiser is open to all individuals over 21 years of age, including CPCRN Board Members, Directors, Group leaders or managers alike with one exception. The person who will run the random selection program to pull 100 unique pledge square numbers will not be allowed to participate in this fundraiser, NOR will they have access or be privy to the database prior to the random number selection which will be time stamped by the program and dated.
  • If all 1000 pledge squares have not been assigned, then the 100 unique numbers will be drawn from only those pledge squares that have been assigned. IF all 1000 squares are assigned, CPCRN will be giving as an appreciation gift one gift per every 10 squares filled. If only 500 squares are assigned, the odds of being gifted becomes one in 5 per square that bears your name. ALL 100 gifts will be given, regardless of the number of squares assigned with individual names.
  • Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network has assigned a non-CPCRN Board member and trusted individual who has been given a "RANDOM SELECTION PROGRAM", which will provide a time stamped and dated list of the programs randomly selected numbers based on the amount of squares with names [i.e. if we have 772 pledges, the Random Selection program will be programmed to select 100 lucky gift recipients and give us the list IN SELECTION ORDER from 1 to 772. This individual will have NO knowledge of our donations database or who has been assigned what number(s) or pledge squares, and WILL NOT pledge in this fundraiser.
  • This fundraiser will close and a match with the Random Selection program will be made when EITHER of the following occurs : 1) ALL 1000 squares have been assigned a name OR 2) The closing date and time, as mentioned above has been met. IF by chance, the 1000 square goal has been met, an absolute time frame will be promptly set for BOTH the individual who will run the Random Selection program AND the volunteer who is keeping the database, and an earlier drawing will be announced on Cairn Rescue Mentoring.
  • Once the fundraiser closes, the following will occur: The random selection program, when run, will show the results to the person but also automatically email the results to the following addresses:
    • Danielle Rackstraw, General Manager
    • RaffleDonations@cairnrescue.com
    • CairnRescueMall@cairnrescue.com
    • The individual who will run the Random Selection program
  • The results will be promptly posted on this page and sent to CRM.
  • Winners will be notified of their win on this page at the bottom within 24 hours of the close of the New Leash.
  • Most items will be mailed out within two weeks after you have been notified of your win and we have received your full donation. If your item needs to be personalized in any way (embroidered items, size specification, reservations, etc.) you have 30 days after notification of your win to provide any required information, unless otherwise noted in the gift description. If not, the item will be forfeited and donated back to CPCRN.
  • Non - US Shipping: CPCRN reserves the right to charge any winner having their item sent to a foreign country the difference between postage within the USA and to the country which this item is being sent. Recipient is responsible for any customs or duty charges.
