Puppy stores are out there.. with racks full of young and older puppies. Just where do they come from?

Not from a responsible breeder - one who does health checks on their dogs, who makes sure hips and eyes of the offspring will be as good as or better than their parents. Not from breeders who understand how important it is to socialize a young dog, first by its mother and then by people.

No, these puppies come from puppy mills which are facilities that breed dogs solely for the purpose of monetary gain. When we rescue these puppies and older dogs, the first thing we do is take them to the nearest Veterinarian. They are checked for parasites, wormed, and spayed or neutered. They get their teeth cleaned, are vaccinated and then are checked for ear infections or any other obvious ailments. The average cost is in the hundreds of dollars. Most of these dogs come into CPCRN underweight, dirty and matted, having never been groomed or cared for. All know nothing about living in a home and being loved, cared for, and safe. They don't know how to use stairs, go through a doorway, or what toys are for. They've never had enough to drink or eat and most have never been held in a kindly way by a human being.
The next step of their rescue is rehabilitation. It's in a cairn's nature to love humans, even in spite of their ill treatment by them. Most respond very quickly to their foster families. For some, rehabilitation takes only a few weeks, for others it can take months. By the time you see a cairn on our website, most are ready for you to adopt. They have been given their first taste of love, safety, trust, gentleness, enough food and water, and the new knowledge that life can be wonderful. But the best is saved for last! The next step is discovering their own forever family and their place in it. These plucky little dogs love their foster family, but they know deep in their hearts that something better is waiting out there for them. They wait for their forever home and the joy that being adopted will bring!
When people get a dog that came from a mill, they NEVER think of the mom. Here are some pictures of little Wesson, who came in this week. Wesson is 11.5 years old. She is wheaton and was the most withdrawn of the four that came in this week, but that is probably because she is in severe pain. Her ears are very badly infected and look like a cauliflower inside. We won't have a full medical evaluation on her until Friday, but she can certainly use your prayers that the infection will be treatable and it has not spread to any vital organs in her little body. The first picture shows a close-up of her ears. This will definitely bring tears to your eyes that someone could be so cold and cruel as to not seek medical treatment for her long before it ever got to this point! The second one shows her lying in obvious pain and discomfort. Col. Potter will ensure she gets proper medical care, and more importantly love and comfort.

A major reason about our concern for Wesson, is that we recently had a similar dog, Amaretto, come in with severe ear infections, who did not make it to an earthly forever home. We know she is happy in heaven playing with our Lord..

Updates on Dogs Featured in Prior New Leashes
Frisco was adopted by his foster family and is living happily with all his pals.

Riannon has been adopted and will never have to dream of mail boxes again. Do you remember this little tiny girl? RiRi is now a whopping 8 pounds big (almost 6 months old now), still has the dark muzzle and rimmed ears but she is a red/apricot coloring.

She is having a ball in South Carolina being an "only child". She actually has learned to hit the window blinds when she needs to go outside and it sounds like she has wrapped her family around her little paws. She will be going to spend a week at the Beach next week - has learned to "shop" in her family's garbage, plays like a maniac with her Cousin Buffy (a yorkie) and all in all, it sounds like she is totally loved and spoiled.

With the cold winter nights almost upon us, think of all the loving little Cairns who will be nestled in a comfy bed by a cozy fire with a forever family to love and protect them. As they dream their dreams, of zooming and aroooooooing, their memories of their life before rescue are fading, fading away. Help us make this possible for many more little Cairns out there waiting for rescue......waiting for you! This is a dream made real by your donations.

It is in excellent condition.

Rainbow Bridge Print
This signed print is 16 x 20 and doesn't have a frame or mat with it. It is entitled Rainbow Bridge at the bottom. It was painted by an Iroquois man named Eli Thomas, from the Onondaga Nation's Wolf clan. He was a winner of the New York Times reader's poll for best local artist in Syracuse. He is renowned for his landscape paintings which show the spirit of environmental elements and has sold some really beautiful paintings of wolves and nature for as much as $3000 It is reproduced on a four-color press and you can see all the texture of the canvas in the print.

THE RULES
This fundraiser is devoted to specifically helping in the procurement,
vetting and foster care of Puppy Mill breeding dogs and other Mill surrender dogs.

Col Potter Cairn Rescue Network is an IRS registered 501(c)3 Charity.
Our donation response letter contains information about tax eligibility.

These are the rules:

  • Our Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network's A New Leash On Life V Fundraiser will start on Friday, October 14th, 2005 at 9:00 AM EDT and will end on Sunday, October 30th, 2005 at 9:00 PM EDT, or sooner, if all 2000 pledge squares have been assigned sooner.
  • For every $15 donation or like quantity thereof [i.e. a donation of $60.00 would entitle a donor to have their name placed in four squares] a pledge square or squares will be assigned to the donor, numbered between 1 and 2000. Pledged squares are assigned sequentially as donations are received. Specific number(s) cannot be requested by the donor. Your pledge square numbers will be e-mailed to you upon processing your donation submission and entry into our A New Leash On Life V database. All donations must be received within 30 days after the close of the fundraiser, otherwise your entry will be voided and any gifts won forfeit.
  • When making your donation, you will be asked to list your top 10 choices in gifts. Once submitted, prize requests cannot be changed. CPCRN reserves the right to choose for you if all your prize choices were previously won. We hope you like it, there will be no changes once the award has been announced. There is no guarantee that the gift you win will be the most valuable. Vacation prizes will only be won by those who request them.
  • Gift selection has been automated with the following rules:
    • If your pledge square is drawn, three passes will be made to determine which gift you will receive. All passes will go in order of the Winners Selection Listing. Gift searching stops for your square once a prize has been awarded.
    • Pass 1: You will be awarded the top gift still available from your wish list. If your top available gift is "Donate Gift Back to CPCRN" then your gift search stops, and this is considered your selection. If your top available gift is "Pick For Me" or if all of your wish list items that are associated with that raffle square were previously selected by prior winners, then gift selection will be attempted during "Pass 2".
    • Pass 2: All winners who did not have a gift selected in Pass 1 will have our database checked for alternate gift selections on different squares assigned to the same name. (If you use a nickname one time, and your full name the next, we will NOT associate them.) If any of these squares are associated with gifts that have not yet been awarded, the highest ranking available gift will be chosen for you. If gifts are available on more than one square at the same level, the choice between them is random. If all gifts on every square belonging to unique name are not available, then gift selection will occur during Pass 3.
    • Pass 3: All those that do not already have a gift selection will be randomly assigned a gift via a random number generator.
  • $15 donation for a pledge square is a suggested donation. You may receive one pledge square per household without donating. Send a request to RaffleDonations@cairnrescue.com. If more than one request is received from the same household only the first request will be honored. Please include all the information requested on the donation form along with your list of 10 choices in the email or we will use 'Pick for Me' as your choice.
  • This fundraiser is open to all individuals over 21 years of age, including CPCRN Board Members, Directors, Group leaders or managers alike with one exception. The person who will run the random selection program to pull 150 unique pledge square numbers will not be allowed to participate in this fundraiser, NOR will they have have access or be privy to the database prior to the random number selection which will be time stamped by the program and dated.
  • If all 2000 pledge squares have not been assigned, then the 150 unique numbers will be drawn from only those pledge squares that have been assigned. IF all 2000 squares are assigned, CPCRN will be giving as an appreciation gift one gift per every 15 squares filled. If only 500 squares are assigned, the odds of being gifted becomes one in 5 per square that bears your name. ALL 150 gifts will be given, regardless of the number of squares assigned with individual names.
  • Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network has assigned a non-CPCRN Board member and trusted individual who has been given a "RANDOM SELECTION PROGRAM", which will provide a time stamped and dated list of the programs randomly selected numbers based on the amount of squares with names [i.e. if we have 772 pledges, the Random Selection program will be programed to select 100 lucky gift recipients and give us the list IN SELECTION ORDER from 1 to 772. This individual will have NO knowledge of our donations database or who has been assigned what number(s) or pledge squares, and WILL NOT pledge in this fundraiser.
  • This fundraiser will close and a match with the Random Selection program will be made when EITHER of the following occurs : 1) ALL 2000 squares have been assigned a name OR 2) The closing date and time, as mentioned above has been met. IF by chance, the 2000 square goal has been met, an absolute time frame will be promptly set for BOTH the individual who will run the Random Selection program AND the volunteer who is keeping the database, and an earlier drawing will be announced on Cairn Rescue Mentoring.
  • Once the fundraiser closes, the following will occur: The random selection program, when run, will show the results to the person but also automatically email the results to the following addresses:
    • Danielle Rackstraw, CEO
    • RaffleDonations@cairnrescue.com
    • CairnRescueMall@cairnrescue.com
    • The individual who will run the Random Selection program
  • The results will be promptly posted on this page and sent to CRM.
  • Winners will be notified of their win, first on this page, then through their email address that was supplied when their donation was made. The email notification should be done within 3 days of closing. Actual prize notification may take longer since it is done in a first win, first pick order.
  • Most items will be mailed out within two weeks after you have been notified of your win. If your item needs to be personalized in any way (embroidered items, size specification, reservations, etc.) you have 30 days after notification of your win to provide any required information, unless otherwise noted in the prize description. If not, the item will be forfeited and donated back to CPCRN.
  • Non - US Shipping: CPCRN reserves the right to charge any winner having their item sent to a foreign country the difference between postage within the USA and to the country which this item is being sent. Recipient is responsible for any customs or duty charges.
