On Saturday, May 20, a local rescue group in Wichita, Kansas contacted Colonel Potter about a Cairn in the Wichita Animal Shelter in desperate need of medical attention. We only had sketchy details and weren't able to get back in touch with the local rescue group. After some investigation and several phone calls, we found him. We’ve named him Miracle, for his story truly is a “miracle.” Miracle got away from his home on Friday, May 19, and was attacked by two pit bulls. The attack left Miracle with a hole 3 inches in diameter on the front of his left front leg which intersects with a hole 1-inch in diameter on the back of his left front leg. The report we received was that his owners opted not to seek medical attention and surrendered him to the shelter. Like most animal shelters, the Wichita shelter does not have the financial means and staffing to provide medical care. Miracle sat in the shelter’s holding pen Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and part of Monday with these open, agonizing wounds, with the shelter staff doing the best they could. On Monday morning, May 22, the shelter vet, on a routine visit, saw Miracle. The "on staff" vet simply examines the newcomers every couple of days to determine who is healthy enough to stay for a few days and who should be put down. The vet said that if a rescue group didn't pull Miracle immediately and get him medical attention Miracle would have to be put down. Miracle had been in the shelter four days with visible large, open, intersecting wounds that were dirty and now maggot infested. No one knew if invisible internal injuries existed, or what lay under his matted coat. Colonel Potter’s Intakes Team went to work immediately trying to find Miracle from the late post on Saturday evening. We had very few details on him and we had to query a few shelters to locate him. One Miracle was located, Valerie, VP of Intakes, contacted Lisa, a member of our Rescue Team that lives near the Wichita shelter. On Monday, Valerie arranged for Miracle’s release to Colonel Potter and for a local vet to be on standby as Lisa rushed to get Miracle out of the shelter and to the veterinarian. Miracle’s initial exam had to be done under anesthesia to be able to fully evaluate his injuries without causing him any further pain. The veterinarian’s report estimated Miracle to be about 7 to 8 years old and pinpointed the 3-inch hole on the front of his left front leg and 1-inch hole on the back of his left front leg which were now covered by maggots from being left untreated and dirty. The vet asked if we wanted to continue on, or just stop now and put Miracle to sleep. The vet hadn't even had a chance to examine too much else of him or do any internal examination because of the dirt, filth, and maggots on him. Of course, we said, “continue,” because that is what we do, we rescue Cairns, sick or healthy, young, and old, we rescue Cairns! As with any Cairn we rescue, we are giving Miracle every chance to make a full recovery, get to a foster home, and eventually to a forever home that will love and care for him like he should have been. We are designating Miracle as a Guardian Angel Cairn and if you would like to help with his medical expenses, please go to our Guardian Angel page. We'll be checking on Miracle’s medical condition each day and will report back with updates and post them as addendums to this article. In the meantime, please send “Prayers for Miracle.”

Update: Tuesday, 23 May 2006, 13:57:03 -0700 (PDT) Miracle is hanging in there! He has been shaved down so that the vet staff would better be able to see, clean, and treat all of his many wounds. Miracle is currently on a heavy dose of antibiotics and painkillers. At this point, the vet is leaving his many wounds open rather than closing them to give them a better chance to drain and heal with less chance of further infection being closed inside the wounds. Lisa, a member of the Rescue Team and Foster Mom, is the angel who rushed over to the shelter yesterday upon Intakes call to pick-up Miracle and get him to the vet. Lisa went back today to visit Miracle and see what was left of the dirty, matted Cairn boy she delivered yesterday. She reported that Miracle still looks miserable and smells awful, but he was interested in her and perked up when people talk to him. Lisa also took a couple of pictures of Miracle, who she assures us really is a Cairn -- albeit a naked one now. You can see the large dark spot that starts on Miracle's chest. That is the 3-inch hole which continues right into his leg. Then on the backside of the same leg, you can just see the dark spot that is the 1-inch hole that connects to the frontal wound. Various other wounds are plainly visible on his head, chest, legs, and back. Currently Miracle has nerve damage in his legs. Hopefully, once he heals, so will the nerves and he will once again have use of his front legs. Miracle is in a large run, not a crate, so he has plenty of room to stretch out and move if he wants to. He has also eaten some and drank water, both good signs! Please keep those prayers coming for Miracle, they've gotten him this far. We need to get him the rest of the way! Valerie, VP of Intakes, CPCRN

Update: Wednesday, 24 May 2006 16:14:06 -0700 (PDT) Spoke with the doctor late this afternoon ... she is very pleased and hopeful with little Miracle's progress! He is eating and drinking and moving around which she takes as VERY positive signs for our boy! They have even switched him over to oral meds for the pain and antibiotics instead of injections. At this point, they see no complications, but continue to monitor him closely and will continue with the current protocol until the beginning of next week. If there are no complications or adverse reactions to anything, then next week, they will assess if he is strong enough to withstand being put under anesthesia to suture some of the larger, still open wounds, do a dental and neuter Miracle. This is a wonderful report on Miracle and the best we could have hoped for this boy. To think that he would have been put to sleep after his initial examination by the shelter vet, and even the vet treating him suggested the same for Miracle initially. Today the vet told me she was glad Miracle was with us and glad we made the decision we did for him and that we could provide him with the care he needed. She's not the only one, so am I. Miracle is only alive today thanks to Col. Potter and the wonderful and generous volunteers that support these little furkids. Miracle isn't able to say the words, but if he were, I know he'd say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone for helping to save his life! Valerie, VP of Intakes, CPCRN

Update: Thursday, 25 May 2006 17:50:35 -0700 (PDT)
Miracle continues to slowly improve and make progress! Today the vet applied wet to dry dressings on Miracle's wounds to debride them. The dressing is applied wet and allowed to dry then peeled off. This removes the dead skin from the infected tissue. Miracle's wounds look good and are healing well with no new infection noted. Most importantly -- Miracle seems to be perking up and in good spirits! This boy is still not out of the woods and has a long road ahead of him. However, it appears that Miracle is a fighter and with the wonderful care he is receiving, he has a chance, a real chance to survive! Please keep those prayers coming -- I know they're working! I just got back from visiting Miracle at the vet. He is looking so much happier! Not at all like Monday or Tuesday. The vet said they're still doing the wet-to-dry bandages but hope to put a regular bandage on tomorrow. She said the wound on the outside of his leg looks really good - healthy pink healing tissue and the big one under his arm is 75% healthy with no new infection. She said he tries to be good and they do as much as he can tolerate at a time, but that they did sedate him for today's bandage changes. But also that he's happier, less grumpy and snappy. However, who could blame him with the pain he's been in. I sat on the floor and chatted with him. It was hard to get pictures because he wanted in my lap. I fed him a couple tiny bits of a biscuit and he took them politely and looked for more. I left him with a Nylabone and a talking ball. They hope to be able to do surgery to close up the big wounds on Tuesday or Wednesday. The vet feels really good about his chances, said the absolute worse case is that he could lose that leg if the nerve damage is too great. But that we need to give him at least a month to see how it goes. He's managing OK on 3 legs now anyway. He's a nice little dog, interested in me, friends. and with all the staff at the vet. They assured me they're spoiling him as much as possible. He's very happy to be alive even though he's got a lot of recovery ahead of him. He'll have a quiet weekend with the holiday to sleep and heal. I'll check up on him again on Tuesday.Lisa

The report I received on our little Miracle today was VERY good! I'm going to let you hear directly from one of the wonderful vets that has been caring for and treating Miracle. Following is an email I received from her this afternoon summarizing our phone conversation and sending some pictures of Miracle's open wounds and once they were sutured closed. The four pictures won't all fit in this email, so I'll follow-up with a second email with the second set of pictures. This vet has been wonderful to work with and very caring about Miracle. I was just informed this afternoon that they are donating the boarding cost for Miracle. This is just such a very generous gesture and is so much appreciated! Well, here's the message I received: When he came to us on Monday, you could hardly tell he was alive. His head, neck, and front legs were covered in bite wounds, filth, and maggots. He was cleaned up and shaved. The first time I saw the wounds on Wednesday the smell could knock you out and the tissue underneath looked like spoiled hamburger. Daily changes of wet to dry bandages slowly removed the infection and cleared the necrotic debris. With each bandage change the smell improved and the tissue turned pink. By Friday, you could not smell him coming. As he is healing physically, he is healing emotionally as well. Wednesday he growled when you went to get him. Now he meets you with a smiling face and a wagging tail. Partly because he feels better and partly because he now knows, he is safe. (He loves to snuggle) Today was a big day for him and we closed his wounds, cleaned his teeth, and neutered him. It was a bit of a challenge closing the wound under his arm and it may not heal perfectly, but he is awake, smiling and well on the road to recovery. Thank you all for saving him and giving him life again! Valerie, VP of Intakes, Col. Potter Cairn Rescue NetworkMiracle's wounds are very graphic. To see them, Click Here

On June 5, 2006, Miracle paid his last visit to the vet's who had saved his life. They were thrilled to see him and he was really happy to be there, imagine that! He dragged his temporary foster mom toward his vet and the various techs wagging happily. Miracle is now on the road to his new foster home in Iowa. Please check his listing for updates and pictures from his new foster home. Thanks to all our supporters for following Miracle's story and we hope you will stay tuned for a future Happy Ending for this Miracle Boy. |

I picked up Miracle and brought him home this morning!! Everyone at the vet clinic was sad to see him leave. I think they were hoping I'd leave him just a few more days. But we'll be back for a visit on Monday if all is going well. He'll be here for a few days before moving to a permanent foster home. He's WAGGING his tail now! I hadn't seen the tail up and waving before today. Aside from being bald and having big sets of zipper-stitches, he looks like a normal sort of dog! Head up, ears up - happy to be alive. They got all the other minor wounds cleaned up too - like the one on his head. And brushed out his mustache and tail - the only hair he has left :-) His short undercoat is a pale yellow, his tail is light wheaten, I imagine he'll be really pretty when it all grows back again. I've settled him in my laundry room (off the kitchen, with 2 windows) and he's quiet and resting. He's met Nettle-cat, official greeter of new dogs and was uninterested - especially when Nettle sniffed, hissed and then rubbed against him. What he really wants is for me to sit on the floor and rub his ears. I'll try to spend as much time doing that as I can while he's here. He's wearing an Elizabethean collar when I'm not there to watch so he appreciates scritches on all those places he can't reach. They said no baths for 2 weeks, but I have some of those pet-wipes and will scrub away at the healthier patches - he does have that kennel-smell. But it's so much better than the awful sick dog smell, we won't complain! Hurray for Miracle, he's taken the next step down the road to a happy life!

| 6/3/2006 9:36:21 P.M. Just a short one... He's doing great. I think his pain level went way down today - he's starting to show his personality - which is all bouncy and happy. He jumped on my leg for petting. He's a Licker! He can easily go up and down the 2 steps into my house. He wants to RUN, 3 legs or no, but is on a leash per vets orders. And now and again, he touches that sore leg to the ground for a step or two. He can move it so I think he'll get a lot of use back. That's all for today!Lisa |

6/4/2006 7:45:45 A.M. ![]() When I see dog rescues on TV, I think "Oh no, just put him to sleep quick so he doesn't have to suffer". When I got Miracle out of the shelter, I was thinking the same. He was so sad and suffering so. I was relieved when the vet said they'd knock him out quickly to look at his wounds. At least he wouldn't be hurting anymore for a little while. Then to visit him those first few days when he was still obviously hurting and miserable - it was hard to watch.
Whoever ends up with Miracle is going to get a really nice friendly loving little buddy. It's probably good that he's moving out of my house on Tuesday because I'm getting pretty darn attached. Especially yesterday when he started jumping on my leg and licking my ear.... Time for him to share the love with the next person in line! Lisa |

A few tears were shed before we left.He starts the next leg of his journey tomorrow. And someone else will take over reporting after that!!!! The vet's office wants to be kept updated and they want pictures as he heals and grows hair ;-) Lisa |

We have had Mr. Miracle in our home since Wednesday. He is a real joy to know.
His large wound is still seeping. But is it not stopping him from getting around. He is still on pain medication and it makes him a bit drowsy. So he has lots of down time. Baylee has taken him under her wing and minds him very well. Tia is a bit scared of the big blue collar as are Kringle and Honey. Miracle has to wear the collar almost all the time as he naturally wants to lick and scratch when he does not have it on. He was very curious when our baby grandson came over today. Very gentle but very curious... You could almost hear his mind working..." What is that thing and why is it yelling like that?" He loves scritches and actually gave Kenneth his belly to rub today. He gives kisses and just want to be loved on. I hope you enjoy the pictures.Deirdre

And he can use his bad leg to balance if the occasion arises. He Loves to be held and gives the most gentle of kisses. He is a real lover and has given both Kenneth & myself his tummy to rub. We both feel very fortunate to be a small part of his recovery. Deirdre |

6/17/2006 1:20:16 A.M. Mr. Miracle had a busy day today. First he went to see the Vet. Our Vet was amazed at his story and that he was still alive and she said she could certainly see why his name is Miracle. When she looked at all his scars she felt sure that the dog(s) that did that to him were certainly trying to kill him. His over all health is good. His side wound is doing very well and so he got those sutures taken out.
His chest wound is still seeping. Our Vet wants to leave those sutures in at least another week. He still has a fairly large amount of swelling in his leg and shoulder. She is a little concerned that there may be some infection still left in there. So she put him on antibiotics. She said that at this stage of recovery the greatest danger of him loosing his leg would be if there was an infection that got into the bone. His temperature was normal and his foot and pad were warm. She would have been concerned if the foot or pad was cool, that could indicate a circulation problem. She washed his chest wound with hydrogen peroxide to break down some of the clumps of matter that has accumulated around the sutures. I asked her if there was any physical therapy I can start to work on with him that might strengthen his leg. Her suggestion at this stage was water therapy. If he likes it we are to let his "swim" in the bath tub every day. She said that some dogs like this and some don't. If he thinks it is fun, it will do him some good. Other therapy will have to wait until he can put more weight on the leg. He goes back to see her again next Friday. Hopefully he will get some more of his sutures out .. Maybe even all of them.
As it was a bright sunny day today I decided to clean.... All the dog beds and crates got taken outside for a good airing while I washed floors and did other Mom type stuff. As you can see ... Miracle supervised .... Baylee and Kringle kept tabs on the Squirrel who was in the tree .... Tia and Honey were on watch for the deadly Mail truck .. A noisy monster who comes every day and needs chasing off. Then, when the cleaning was done ... I took a shower ... and when I came out of the shower Tia, Baylee and Mr. Miracle were all napping on our bed ... Now I want you to understand ... My bed is VERY HIGH and a small dog in a blue Super Dog cape had jumped up all by himself ... (unless of course Baylee or Tia had given him a boost....) Naturally when I went to get the camera ... all three of them jumped down and followed me ...where did they think I was going .. dripping wet and wrapped in a towel .. to get a quick snack??? So anyway.. His Lordship in making progress. I don't think he is out of the woods yet ... but we can sure see the dappled sunlight through the trees. |

| 6/25/2006 6:18:18 P.M. Mr. Miracle is doing very well.
He went to see the Vet on Friday and got the last of his stitches out. There is a tiny place in the middle of the largest wound that still has a little discharge. Our vet said that he should finish up his antibiotics and then I should just keep the place clean and watch it for a few days. If it continues to discharge or the amount increases then he needs to go back in. But the stitches right at the discharge were very loose and were not really holding the flesh together. So she saw no reason to leave them in. He also gets to leave his cape off. So he can give himself a good scratch and a good lick. Luckily he cannot really got to the part of his chest wound that is discharging. He does however turn over on his back and let me put Neosporin on the wound for him. He also lets me massage the scar tissue on his leg, side and tummy. We also do little stretching exercises with his bad leg just to keep the muscles limber and he does not mind that either. The wound on his side that has had the stitches out for nine days now is looking very good. The large wound on the top of his head is almost covered over with fur. Interestingly, the new growth over the scar is a different color that the rest of his coat. His ear tips are a kind of red and the scar is the same color. The coat on his tummy is beginning to come in just a little. His bad right leg is improving. The Vet in Kansas who saved his life and patched him up told us that there was a little nerve damage to that leg. So it is entirely possible that it will never be 100% right. However he is beginning to use it a little. More for balance than for running but every now and then he will take a few hopping limping kind of steps with all four feet on the ground. When he jumps up at the patio door to let us know he want in both front feet are on the door. He also stretches the leg himself when he gets up from a nap. Do not let the fact that he is still only using three legs make you think that in any way his lack of four good legs slows him down. He can run with the others. Faster than Honey and slower than Tia but he does very well. He can manage to carry a size 12 slipper all the way from the bedroom into the kitchen. And he can shake a stuffed cow until it was good and dead and then toss it into the air. He is very alert and very intelligent. He watches everything. Gets into everything. And every day and in every way he finds more and more of his inner Cairn. He may still be recuperating, but he is first and foremost a three year old Cairn boy and the world is his to conquer.
| ||||||||||
| 7/7/2006 11:33:23 P.M Miracle is getting more and more active every day. He is walking on four legs about 90% of the time. Most of the time when he first wakes up from his nap he limps a little on his bad leg. Almost as if it is a little stiff. But by the time he has been up and about for a while he is doing fine. His wound is completely closed with no discharge at all. His coat is growing back nice and course, just like it should be. He is very good about his crate. When we tell everyone its bedtime he runs and gets into his crate right away. He stands in the crate waiting for his good night cookie. As soon as he has it he flops down ready for the night. When we go to let them out in the morning Miracle is usually on his back dreaming his Cairn dreams and his crate is always clean and dry. Miracle is a sweet little dog. He loves scritches, tummy tickles and ear rubs. He gives the softest kisses and just folds himself into my arms for quiet Cairn cuddles. As Miracle gets better and better in every day and in every way he finds more and more of his inner Cairn. Today for example Kenneth was working on the computer so I decided to give in to temptation a take a little nap. I was woken up by Tia who was nudging me with her nose. So I rolled over and she and I were having a Mommy and Cairn cuddle. Then I heard a little cry .. A kind of a squeak. a noise I could not quite identify.... I sat up and looked around my bedroom. Who do you suppose was standing on top of my dresser? Right in among the cans of hairspray, body lotion and talcum powder was a small blond "handicapped" dog. I went over and lifted him down and explained that he was a dog, not a dresser ornament.
Tia, Miracle and I went to find the rest of the gang. I told Kenneth about Mr. M's adventure in the bedroom. Our Living room window is a bay, standing at in mid chest height, with a large sill. And sure enough, when I went and looked. Everything was rearranged. So Please don't be fooled into thinking that this poor handicapped little dog lets his "bad" leg slow him down a whit. He is about 3 years old and he is a real Cairn boy. He steals .. Shoes, laundry, other dogs toys.... Things happen when he is around. Waist baskets and kitchen garbage cans magically fall over. Toilet paper unrolls itself ... Magazines and newspapers left neatly on the coffee table fall on the floor. Plants and pictures on window sills rearrange themselves. The world is his to explore and he does his exploring at a run. Yesterday he zoomed.. just for the love of zooming.
Miracle is a darling little man. He needs a forever home that will guide him in his development and not take any guff from him. I think he would do very well at so many things. Flyball, agility, earth dog, school visits. He is SO smart. So very willing to please and so very food motivated. The next step on his journey is a forever home. He needs a family with love, time, love, patience and love to squander on him. A family who is as strong willed as he is. A family who will bask in his achievements and who will revel in his growth and development. Deirdre

| 8/4/2006 11:14:54 P.M. A Letter to Miracle: Dear Miracle: I cannot tell you how much I ached for you when we were first contacted and how angry and upset I was that this was allowed to happen to you and then that people could be so cold and callous as to just dump you at a shelter without any medical care. When Lisa rushed you to the vet and they contacted me with the severity of your injuries, I just became angrier. Absolutely not, we were not going to let you go to the Rainbow Bridge, at least not without trying, not without a fight. I cried and worried so for you those first few days, but then you showed us what you were made of ... you are a Cairn and you had way too much living to do. The entire vet staff fell in love with you and so admired you for your courage and determination to survive. I couldn't wait for you to get well enough and start your journey to me to foster, but then as luck would have it, you got dognapped in Iowa. Deirdre and Kenneth fell in love with you, how could they not, and so you finished your recuperation in their loving arms. And now it is time for you to make the final stop of your journey, to your loving forever home. One that will never turn their backs on you again, one that will never allow you to be hurt again, one that will love and care for you forever. You are truly a Miracle little boy and if anyone doesn't understand what a rescue is and why they are needed, they only have to read your story. Thank you for allowing Col. Potter and me personally to be a part of your Miracle. Rescue doesn't get any better or give any more rewards than to see your foster mom's eyes dripping because you have your very own forever home. Well folks, yesterday was a wonderful day.. The boy got to have a bath ... and a good brushing ... His new Mom and Dad sent him old worn, unwashed smelly t-shirts, just as I asked them to. They also sent a used bandana from his new brother Rion. So the boy got to sleep with the smell of his new family all around him for several nights. Foster Mom worried .... Foster Mom hugged him tight and petted him and told him all about Colorado ... His new Dad likes Ice hockey, so the boy got a Colorado Avalanche collar and leash .. And Foster Mom worried ... We packed up his crate .. and his paper work .. and some new toys .. and a couple of old ones ...And off we went to West Des Moines.
Shelly (his new Mom) stayed home with Rion, who is one .. and a quite feeble older gentleman who is 15 and not doing too well at all. A hard choice for her to make, but one that speaks volumes of the care this family takes of their furrkids. ... We arrived with no problems .. and got the boy out of his crate .... and I really worried .. and tried not to cry .... But I shouldn't have worried ... Brad smelled right to the boy.. and Shelly had sent a bag of Beggin Strips ... Between the familiar smell of his new Dad and a couple of strips cut into tiny pieces ... the boy knew he was with the right person and forgot all about Foster Mom & Dad.... So I asked Brad, "What are you going to call the boy?" "Oh, we'll keep the name Miracle. It suits him so well," he said while pulling out a new name tag with the boy's name, new address and phone number on it..... Which of course started my eyes dripping again....
Miracle Collins ... a wonderful name .. a wonderul day ... And as I watched through my tears, Miracle followed his new family into the garage with never a backwards glance ... Good luck my friend ... Thank you for being a wonderful part of our life.. I will think of you often. Deirdre & Kenneth,

8/9/2006 9:43:34 P.M Greetings from Colorado!
Hello!
We thought you might want to see and hear how Miracle is doing...attached are a few photos. Miracle is a very cuddly guy and those big brown eyes are hard to resist. And is he smart! He loves to play with us but not Rion directly yet (our 1 year old Cairn). I think Miracle is still a little taken aback because Rion is a bit larger and a LOT more energetic! They do run around the house together and I joke that I don't have the two dogs but one with eight legs. (O'Brian, the older one, sleeps most days.) Miracle loves to perch up on the back of our couch and one chair we have in the living room. I think that's so he can patrol for birds and rabbits in the yard. I included a picture of the backyard so you could see we have lots of room for him to run. When we eat it is very much a challenge now with three pairs of big eyes begging for food! We have an appointment with the vet on Friday just as a baseline introduction and to take in copies of the medical reports. Our vet knows us very well with all the trips we have made with our oldest. This weekend we are taking Miracle up to pick our son up from camp -- he's been there 3 weeks and doesn't know about this exciting event yet. Miracle is a joy and a delight. We are grateful that you helped to bring him into our lives! Shelly and Brad
