Many thanks to Ann and Wayne Stainback for their sharing of this fantastic time with us!

Tootie is having her pups, so far 1 male, gray in color and kicking hard. I came home from work, sommer said she wouldn't come out of my bedroom so I went in to see her. she came to me, but was trembling....I loved her and she ran under my bed. I left her for 1 minute and when I went back in, she already had one. I thought something was happening this morning, she wouldn't eat breakfast and sensed she was nearing this time. We'll keep you all informed but so far just one. YEAH!!!!!

She just had another, also a male, but was more interested in eating the placenta than caring for the pup so we had to remove it to motivate her stimulating the puppy.. We have been trying to leave her alone, but began worrying as she wasn't tending to him. He's fine now, and moving about. the first guy is so noisy, making all kinds of happy sounds. I just LOVE having puppies. We'll be back later.

We have another male about the size of the first. The second was a little larger but all 3 are doing fine. She took care of this one a little quicker. Where are the girls?
10/26/2004 7:24:45 PM
#2 is doing better now, we were a little worried and had to swing him a couple of times. #3 came out kicking :-) Tootie is a good Mommy, keeping them clean and close.

#4 just arrived and this one's a girl, YEAH!!! (knew there had to be at least one). This one came out "without the sack" but doing just fine.
(About Swinging...)

Do tell.."Swing him a couple times" what and how is that done and why, not breathing? When you have more time details please, curious her in VT Yeah Number 3!!

Swing gently between your legs (like a football) to get fluid out of their lungs. He stayed in the sack a little long and responded slowly, but doing just great now.

When you have pups, often their lungs are loaded with fluid. It could be fatal is the puppy has had a bowel movement in their sack. This is not unusual either. There is a way you hold them and literally swing them, similar to getting your thermometer to go down in temperature prior to taking a temperature again. It causes the liquid in the lungs, mouth and nose to be hopefully brought to the surface.

From Danielle:

For you new people, whelps tend to slow down towards the end. The pups that are closest to the vulva come out first (obviously). The Mom has what is called HORNS, which are like little individual *apartments* for each baby. USUALLY one comes from one side down the birth canal, then another one comes from the opposite side next, UNLESS for some reason the Mom has lost the pup during pregnancy for some reason and is was resorbed. As Mom has her pups, the pups have to travel farther down the birth canal, thus the reason that the time frame tends to be a little longer. As the pups are born, Mom is getting pooped also, and the contractions tend to be not as strong, yet she has further to push.

FIVE is a fantastic number. Great family.

After all the years of siberian husky pups and now cairns, I still get "juiced" when we have puppies. It's just so cool.. and to get them to all live is sometimes an achievement in itself. All are nursing well, mom is very attentive to them but will let us interact with her and her pups as long as we don't go anywhere with them. When we were moving her into the closet before the 5th pup was born, Ann said she was trying to take the pups and run until she figured out just what we were doing. Now she is just fine in our closet. We've had quite a few of our litters in that closet... works well. Congrats to CPCRN and thanks for everything, we enjoy having litters and starting pups off in the right direction. Ya just gotta love it!!

Tootie and her kids are doing just great. She's being a good Momma and only this morning came out to stretch her legs and go outside. Tootie looks so tiny now that she is "empty" and is eating everything in sight. All the pups are eating, making little squeaky noises and staying close to Mom. We were so impressed with Tootie's ability to do what she had to, and she did it well. Wayne and I both commented, we wish our dogs whelped this easily! I'll get some new pictures tonight, but wanted to let you know this is one happy little family and all are happy and well.

After much thought and watching these kids roll about the box with Mom (Tootie), we formally introduce the SPOOK SQUAD born 10/26/04 and pictures will follow later today;

#1636 is Casper Milquetoast, the 1st born male
#1637 is Ickabod Cairn, the 2nd and largest of the litter
#1638 is Gremlin, just a touch darker then the rest
#1639 is Tricks for Treats, the first girl and very small
#1640 is Candy Corn, the last treat of the evening.

They are all doing well, eating a lot, and have been checked by our vet giving them a clean bill of health. Their dew claws were removed and Tootie is finally taking short breaks from them, for herself. These kids are adorable and so tiny! Thanks for allowing us to name them and we hope these meet everyone's approval. The Halloween theme seemed appropriate since it's so close and we think they are fitting.

Tootie's little family is 4 days old and are dressed as in Mexico during Siesta time, for the Halloween festivities tonight. There are 3 boys named Casper Milquetoast, Ichabod Cairn and Gremlin escorted by 2 girls named Candy Corn and Tricks. All five are very healthy and growing daily giving us such pleasure as we hear them squeek and make happy sounds as they roll about their box. Tootie is taking very good care of them and teaching them all she can while we love them and get them used to people. We are looking forward to watching these kids grow and find forever homes of their very own, but sure will miss their company. My next update shall be individually, but they are simply to tiny to single out just yet and telling one from the other is a task.

Tootie finally turned a corner last night after being so sick since Thanksgiving day still looking very drained a a bit twitchy. She went back yesterday for a calcium lever recheck and we should know tomorrow what those findings are. Today she roamed about the house just to be looking and actually barked once so I know she's feeling improved. She also enjoyed some quality time with her pups, something she's been anxious about for days now. It's taking her a while to bounce back from this, but today she was more like her old self since she got sick.

The spooks are also well and very active now requiring much play and feedings every 2 hours. Tricks for Treats seems to spend more time asleep than the others and is often off to herself, but I make sure she gets loads of human attention and she's doing very well.

12/18/2004 Casper Milquetoast is a sweet guy also born 10/26 with a name fairly fitting for him as well. He is the lightest in color of the 3 males and has a wonderful personality. Casper and Gremlin team up, both being very big and playful, making quite a show with their little rounds of wrestling and biting. Casper lets others start the play, then jumps in feet first sounding like a terror and scaring the girls to death. He loves a tummy rub and will roll over easily to acquire one...he's so sweet and affectionate with kisses abounding. Casper plays well with our older dogs and seems to find his way into someone's lap really often. He also is talkative and will talk back to you if he feels it necessary. Once he experienced being out of the X-pen and among the other dogs, he would bellow till he was hoarse, to be let out and would lean on the pen looking so pitifully. He's a real ham and plays on your sympathy, but we adore him and his playful antics knowing he will make a wonderful family pet for someone. Casper has been called "line backer" by my daughter a lot, so we will have to work on his name a bit, but he's healthy, happy, and full of life just waiting for that perfect home to come his way.
12/18/2004 Days before Halloween (10/26), Ichabod Cairns was born and has turned into an adorable little guy with an easy going personality, although he's as playful as the rest and seems to be involved in everything going on. Ichabod is the smallest of the males with a darker coat and a happy attitude. He likes spending time with his Mom and is absorbing everything she is teaching. He is not rough playing and always ready for personal attention. Ichabod will beg to be picked up and wags his tail with such enthusiasm when you do. This little guy just "goes with the flow" and enjoys the company of everyone around him. He also is due his 1st puppy shot 12/21 and is now healthy and happy. I imagine this kid would fit in anywhere and is a pleasure to have around, but we'll sure miss this one when he's gone...he makes us smile so often.
12/18/2004 Gremlin de Gallo was born 10/26, named for the Halloween season, and seems to fit his name perfectly. He's very vocal and playful, usually the one making all the rules for their games. He loves to be held and played with often chewing on your pants legs when you least suspect it and always finds those "hidden"objects not meant to be played with. He's very healthy and will be getting his 1st puppy shot on Dec. 21. Gremlin is a bundle of curiosity and playfulness seeming now to be the leader of the pack. He knows his name and responds well to voice commands (sometimes) getting along beautifully with the older dogs other than wanting to play too much for their liking. He's high energy, very loveable, and charms us every day with his new discoveries and playful attitude. He will make a wonderful companion and is looking forward to being old enough to go to his own Forever Home.
Tricks for Treats is a special little girl who wasn't very playful at first, but seems to be as active and joyful as the others now in spite of her hernia which will need repairing when she is spayed. She seems to have overcome the fear of something happening to her and just wants to be a normal playful pup, just as her siblings. Tricks has been adopted and is going to live with her sister, Candy Corn, anxiously awaiting the day they meet their new parents. Tricks is healthy, happy, and full of life chasing the others about the house, and keeping up with the best of them. She gets along great with Candy Corn, so their staying together will be a good thing for them both as they bring much joy into their new home. She is full of curiosity and eager to love, giving kisses constantly and loving to be held. Tricks doesn't like to be treated any differently than the others, so we allow her to be herself, making sure the others aren't too rough during their play sessions, and are in awe of how active and playful she is now. She will be a wonderful addition to her new home and badly missed in ours.
Candy Corn is a little treat born during the Halloween season, who is as sweet as her name indicates. She is very small in size, but has a huge amount of energy and loves to play with her siblings as well as the Nuts. Candy runs with the others, just hoping for a chance to be a part of the games and gives the boys a "run for their money" while playing. She sounds as if she is going to rip their heads off while playing, making sure to get everyone's attention and especially that of the boys, who see her as a little thing...someone to be pushed around. She is full of spunk, loving, playful, and needy for attention, just bubbling with anticipation of going to her new home in January. We are enjoying watching her blossom into a sweet little lady and will miss her terribly when she's gone...and so will the other dogs here.
