Thanksgiving, that heavenly food time of the year, is upon us again. While most of us humans will ignore all dietary good sense during this time, we do need to be protective of our pets. While turkey can be a part of any nutritious feeding program, think twice about giving turkey to your dog, especially the fatty turkey skin. Many other Thanksgiving foods are high in fat, too, including ham, gravy, many nuts, and of course butter, among others. If everyone at your table gives "one bite" to the dog, that can add up to a huge helping of fat overloaded food. This can lead to digestive problems or even pancreatitis, a severe illness affecting the pancreas. Pancreatitis can lead to diabetes or even kill your pet. Don't take a chance with fat! Chocolate can also be quite toxic to dogs and is frequently implicated in pancreatitis. Keep your desserts and your boxes of chocolate well out of the reach of your Cairn. Also remember that onions and both grapes and raisins can be deadly to your dog.
Our Cairns can beg quite endearingly, but please resist those eyes and keep your dog healthy! ![]() |
