The Great Escape

Sometimes in rescue work, in spite of all our precautions, things don't go as planned. Cairns are smart dogs, and sometimes they think of things we would never have thought of!  Sosa's story shows us another sample of the workings of a cairn's mind, but it also gives us a chance to remember the dedication and resourcefulness of the volunteers at Col. Potter's.

On Thursday, June 29th, Sosa was being vetted after her rescue from a Georgia puppymill. She was one of 8 cairns rescued from this puppymill; each of them named after a member of the Atlanta Braves baseball team. Miss Sosa being named for Jorge Sosa, a Braves pitcher.

Sosa is a little thing at 11 pounds, but while outside in the fenced enclosure at the vet hospital, she spied a red fox. Not discouraged by the 5-6 foot fence, Sosa climbed the chainlink and chased after the fox. Quickly, a humane trap was set and her favorite treat was smeared on the trap in hopes of enticing Sosa to return. Fearful for her safety, her rescuer, Susan B. searched for her into the night, but Sosa refused to be found. However, after a long night of worry, on Friday morning Sosa was sighted by an employee arriving at the vet hospital. What a relief to know that she had survived the night!

Another volunteer, Carol A., joined Susan on Friday to help in the search. During that day, they searched for signs of Sosa and waited for her to get hungry enough to brave entering the enclosure. It was a tense time for everyone. At the end of the day, Susan returned home without Sosa. However, late in the evening she felt like she should go check the traps again. Imagine her relief when she shone her flashlight into the bigger trap and saw Sosa looking back at her. Sosa barked at Susan and then came to her willingly. She was very scared and covered with mud and little sticker kind of burrs. Susan took her home, bathed her, and removed all of the burrs before tucking Sosa into her crate. Only then could Susan breathe a deep sigh of relief and sleep in peace.

Celebrate with us the freedom found by Sosa, who couldn't wait to try it out. Celebrate her return to safety. And celebrate the dedication of Col. Potter's volunteers, taking time out of their busy lives to rescue, to search, to worry, to care for and to nuture these cairns who sometimes don't realize at first how good they have it at Col. Potter's!

Miracles Really Do Happen
Col Potter takes in many dogs from many places.. owner surrenders, shelter strays, breeder buy outs and sometimes auction. One of our most poignant intakes was a dog who was left at a shelter after having been attacked by two pit bulls. The shelter was one that did not have funds for continual vet care - so he sat in pain for a few days before we were contacted. By that point, his life was in grave danger.

We named him Miracle in the hope he would find one - and he did. Miracle is now healthy and happy in foster care - but we wanted to share his story.
