Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network
Puppymill Challenge 2006

FROM: Valerie Kleine, VP of Intakes
Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network

The month of July was a slow one for Intakes which was good because our foster homes were full as summertime had put a strain on availability, and our finances were stretched. Well, August is going to more than make up for the slow period!!!!!

We have an opportunity to rescue about FORTY Cairns from several puppymills / breeders over the next couple of weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is not a misprint or misspelling on my part ... 40 Cairns from puppymills. Some of the females may be pregnant and I want this to be their last litter and their babies to be born into freedom.

Believe me, I want to go after every single one and I want to be successful ... BUT I can't do it without ALL of your help! WE NEED FOSTER HOMES AND MONEY ... pure and simple, no other way to say it than straight out. If we can't get commitments from foster homes, we can't go after them. If we can't get the money for their vetting which will add up quickly, we can't go after them. One without the other will not help -- we need BOTH foster homes and money!

We know you all have done so much monetarily already with supporting the search for Sunnie and those that attended CA POOP. We know that many of our foster homes have not had a break from fostering in quite awhile and others have continually had multiple fosters. We understand what we are asking of you and know that it is asking a lot. We also know the life of a puppymill cairn and we can't bear the thought of having to say NO, we can't help because we don't have a foster home, or can't afford the vetting costs. But that is exactly what will happen ...

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE if you are able to foster, please see below. These cairns really don't ask for much -- just a soft, safe place to sleep, good food, fresh water and love. They aren't used to much in their lives and just these simple, basic things are like heaven to them. You will never be rewarded more than watching a puppymill cairn blossom and bloom into a real Cairn.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE if you are able to skip that extra cup of coffee from the vending machine at work everyday, or bring your lunch one day a week rather than going out, or combine trips to save a gallon of gas -- if we would all do that, we could afford to give these cairns the life they deserve, a life of freedom.

Update, Labor Day Weekend
So far this weekend TWENTY FOUR, yes I said 24, furkids made their way into the loving arms of Col. Potter.
These cairns are going to run up some pretty high vet bills and that doesn't even contemplate our little boy Celebrate in FL who is awaiting surgery and heartworm treatment. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS MADE A DONATION TO THE 40 PM KID CHALLENGE!!! Every dollar is crucial now and is most certainly appreciated and will be put towards these cairns. If you haven't made a donation yet, waiting to see if there really were going to be 40 PM cairns, I can tell you they are here and they need your help! THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT!

Update 9/8

I would like to personally say THANK YOU to everyone who has made a donation to name a furkid!!! The response has been tremendous and I think you will agree we have some pretty special names for these furkids.

We have a few kids scheduled to come in tomorrow that don't have names pledged for them yet - in particular - one little boy and a little girl. If you would like to name one of these precious babies, please make your donation and submit 3-4 name choices in preference order. I'll check the Used Name Database and the first available choice will be used for these furkids.

With the furkids scheduled to come in this weekend, we will EXCEED our Challenge of 40 PM Kids. The most amazing part is it is only going to be September 9 tomorrow. We still have 21 days left in September and the 40+ does NOT include our shelter and owner surrenders who have been coming into CP as well. This is truly going to be a recordsetting month. It would not have been possible without all the foster home and monetary support we have received. BIG APPLAUSE FOR EVERYONE WHO HAS HELPED TO MAKE THIS POSSIBLE!!!

The limitations on bringing in dogs is FOSTER HOMES and MONEY FOR CARE. We need your help for both.

FOSTER HOMES:

We need spaces for about 40 dogs. We have 35 foster spots pledged for these dogs currently ( ). If you are not a current foster home and would be interested in becoming one - please go to this link Foster a Cairn and sign up. You will need to fill out our application to do so, and will have our usual careful screening done. If you are a recent adoptive home and would like to foster, you just need to fill out the form but without the references or home visit!

If you are a foster home, and you would have an opening for one of these dogs, please click here to send an email to our intakes group.

Don't forget, we will still be taking in Owner Surrenders and Shelter Strays during this time, so we will need foster homes for more than just the mill dogs.

MONEY FOR CARE:

These dogs come in not having had veterinary care so the MINIMUM needed is Shots (rabies, yearly vaccination, bortadella and heartworm testing) as well as a mandatory spay or neuter. We normally have the dogs undergo quarantine at a vets office for a week so that we can ensure they do not carry diseases to our foster homes. In addition, MANY breeder dogs come in with other ailments - ear infections so bad they may permanently lose hearing or be susceptible to other problems, feet problems for being on wire, major dental problems including infections. While we try to keep our vet care costs down, our average costs for an incoming Breeder dog is $500.00 not including transport costs. Our goal then is $20,000 to cover their care. If additional funds come in over that amount, it will be used for vet care for other dogs coming into our system.

If you make a donation of $100 or larger, you can 'name a dog'. Names will be subject to our 'standard' conventions - All CPCRN dogs have a unique name, and CPCRN reserves the right to refuse any name. Click Here to Name a Mill Cairn.
